SeaWolves Stiffle Aeros with Shutout Win on Friday

The SeaWolves, powered by a spectacular pitching performance from Jay Voss and Tyler Stohr, shut out the Akron Aeros 1-0 on Friday night at Canal Park, snapping a two-game losing streak.

The game's lone run came in the top of the fifth inning against Akron starter Matt Packer. With two outs, Justin Henry walked and John Murrian singled putting two on for Jamie Johnson. Johnson sent a ground ball to short, the ball went under the glove of the shortstop Juan Diaz and the error allowing Henry to score for a 1-0 Erie lead.

From that point on it was the Erie pitching staff, which shined, shutting out the Aeros. It was Erie's fifth shutout of the season and the first since a 2-0 win in New Britain on June 12.

Voss (6-5) earned the win going seven innings, allowing three hits with four walks and two strikeouts. He worked out of trouble in the third inning when the Aeros had runners on the corners with one out, inducing a double play from Diaz. In the fourth, the Aeros drew back-to-back walks by Ben Copeland and Kyle Bellows but Voss induced a pop-out to the catcher off the bat of Donnie Webb. Finally in the seventh, Karexon Sanchez doubled with two outs and Voss induced a fly out to center, ending his night.

Stohr picked up right where Voss left off in the bottom of the eighth. He allowed a two-out single but struck out Chun Chen ending the inning with a runner at second.

In the ninth, Stohr allowed a leadoff single to Copeland but got a ground ball double play from Bellows and induced a game-ending ground ball out from pinch-hitter John Drennen, capping off the shutout. Stohr earned his first save of the season.

The SeaWolves have now won two games at Canal Park for the first time since 2008.
