Chesapeake Baysox News Release
New Britain, Conn. - The Baysox were swept by the New Britain Rock Cats in a doubleheader Friday evening. With the losses, the Baysox fall to 57-48 on the season.
It was the second time this season the Baysox have lost both games of a doubleheader as they were also swept by the Harrisburg Senators May 29. The Baysox are 5-8 in doubleheaders this season.
Left fielder LJ Hoes led the way for the Baysox in their 4-3 game 1 loss as he hit two home runs and accounted for all three runs. After playing 54 games without hitting a single home run, Hoes hit two home runs in a game for the second time in four games. Hoes also hit two long balls in Tuesday's win against Harrisburg and it's the fourth time this season a Baysox player has had a multi-home run game.
For the second game in a row, New Britain got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning against right-handed starting pitcher Oliver Drake. Mike Hollimon hit a lead off single to second base and went to second when Deibinson Romero singled to left field. Jair Fernandez plated Hollimon with a single to left field that moved Romero to third where he scored when Mark Dolenc singled to center field to put the Rock Cats up 2-0.
The Baysox tied the game in the top of the third inning against New Britain starter David Bromberg. Right fielder Ronnie Welty drew a lead off walk and then with two outs, Hoes hit a home run to center field.
The Rock Cats took the lead right back with two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Nathan Hanson doubled to left field and Hollimon followed with a walk before Romero cleared the bases with a double to left field that made the score 4-2.
Bowie got one run back in the top of the fifth inning against Rock Cats reliever Deolis Guerra. With one out, Hoes hit his second home run to left field to bring the Baysox to within one run at 4-3.
Drake pitched all six innings for the Baysox and allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking three in his third loss of the season with the Baysox.
The Baysox offense managed just three hits in the second game of the doubleheader and could not keep up with the Rock Cats.
New Britain again struck first in game 2 against right-handed starting pitcher Eddie Gamboa. With one out, Chris Herrmann hit a home run to center field to make the score 1-0.
The Baysox tied the game in the top of the second inning against New Britain starter Steve Hirschfield. First baseman Joe Mahoney hit a lead off double to right field and went to third base when left fielder Buck Britton flied out. Third baseman Brandon Waring plated Mahoney with a sacrifice fly to tie the score at one.
New Britain retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Joe Benson drew a lead off walk and stole second before scoring when Hollimon singled to left field to make the score 2-1.
The Rock Cats extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brian Dozier hit a lead off triple to center field and scored when Benson grounded out to make the score 3-1.
Gamboa pitched five and two-thirds innings and allowed three runs on five hits while striking out five in the loss. Left-handed reliever Pedro Viola recorded the final out of the sixth inning for the Baysox.
With a single to lead off the game for the Baysox, center fielder Xavier Avery extended his hitting streak to 14 games, passing second baseman Greg Miclat and setting a new season-high. He singled again in the third inning of game two to extend his streak to 15 games.
In the second game, Miclat stole his 36th base of the season, but was then picked off and caught stealing later in the sixth inning by Hirschfield. It was the first time Miclat had been caught stealing after successfully stealing 36 bases in 36 attempts this season.
The Baysox began a five game road trip to New Britain Thursday, July 28 and are back home for seven games starting Tuesday, August 2.
