SeaWolves Crush Phillies 13-0

The SeaWolves slammed the Reading Phillies on Saturday night to win their third consecutive game by a score of 13-0.

The SeaWolves struck first in the top of the second inning. Jackson Melian led off with a towering home run over the left-field wall for a 1-0 ‘Wolves lead. The homer was Melian's seventh of the season and it extended his hitting streak to 10 consecutive games.

In the top of the third the ‘Wolves added another run. Nook Logan led off the inning with a single. The next batter was Brent Clevlen who grounded out back to the mound and on a heads-up base running play, Logan advanced from first to third. With two down, Mike Rabelo doubled home Logan for a 2-0 SeaWolves advantage. Rabelo has now hit safely in nine of his last 10 games.

Kody Kirkland put the ‘Wolves up by three runs when he led off the fourth with his 15th home run of the season. The solo-shot put Kirkland back into a tie for the league lead in long balls with Shelley Duncan of Trenton.

Erie exploded for four runs in the top of the fifth inning to knock out Phils starter Gio Gonzalez. Clevlen led off with a walk. Rabelo was then hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. After a Chris Maples strikeout, Melian notched a base hit that scored Clevlen to a 4-0 SeaWolves lead. Kirkland followed by striking out setting Kelly Hunt up with runners on first and second with two outs. Hunt slammed his 10th homer of the season to put Erie on top 7-0.

In the top of the sixth, it was more SeaWolves. Logan connected on his third hit of the game when he led off with a single. Logan has collected three-hit games in both of his games since joining the ‘Wolves. Giarratano followed with his second of three hits to put runners on first and second for Clevlen who singled home Logan to give the ‘Wolves an 8-0 lead. Giarratano would eventually reach third and he scored on a Melian sacrifice fly to left, putting Erie up 9-0.

Hunt led off the top of the seventh with his second home run of the game and his 11th on the year. He homer gave the SeaWolves a 10-0 lead.

The SeaWolves would conclude their scoring in the top of the eighth inning. Rabelo drew his second walk of the game when he led off the inning. After reliever Talley Haines retired the next two hitters, Kirkland doubled to put runners on second and third for Hunt. Hunt came through with his third home run of the game over the wall in centerfield to put Erie up 13-0. The homer for Hunt was his 12th of the season.

Starter Eulogio De La Cruz (1-5) picked up his first win of the season in a spot start. He went seven strong innings retiring the side in six of the seven; he faced only three batters over the minimum. De La Cruz walked one and struck out six in the victory.

Reliever Chris Homer shut down the Phils in the eighth and ninth innings to preserve the SeaWolves seventh shutout win of the season.
