Connecticut Defenders News Release
After sixteen wild innings the previous night, the Defenders did not have enough to take down top prospect Matt Garza and New Britain, as the Rock Cats shut the Defenders out, 6-0.
Early on, Garrett Broshuis was sharp for the Defenders, but the first hit he allowed came in the 3rd inning, and it traveled a long way over the right field wall off the bat of Garrett Guzman, giving New Britain a 1-0 advantage. On the other side, the Defenders only managed a single hit through the first five innings on a two out double in the second inning by Tyler Von Schell. In the top of the 6th inning, still trailing 1-0, The Defenders got a lead off double by Jake Wald, but couldn't bring him in to tie the game.
In the bottom of the 6th, the Rock Cats made the Defenders pay for missing their opportunity, and it was Guzman scoring again on a Trent Oeltjen RBI single after he led off the inning with a long double off the wall. The Rock Cats broke the game open with two runs in the 7th and 8th innings to make the score 6-0. The Minnesota Twins 2005 first round pick, Matt Garza, allowed only two hits in eight shutout innings while striking out seven. The Defenders were retired in order in the 9th, clinching their 15th shut out loss this season, a new club record.
The Defenders will look to rebound on Saturday behind Pat Misch (5-4), who will see a lot of lefty on lefty matchups against the Rock Cats, who have only two right handed hitters on their roster. The Rock Cats will send Justin Olsen (4-2) to the hill to try and take two straight from Connecticut. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
