Erie SeaWolves News Release
For the second time this week, the SeaWolves went into the eighth inning trailing, only to come from behind as they took down the Akron Aeros 4-2 on Saturday night at Canal Park.
The Aeros struck first in the last of the first inning against Erie starter Kyle Lobstein. Jose Ramirez led off with a single and stole second for his league-leading 16th steal. A sacrifice bunt moved Ramierz to third and he scored on a Chun Chen double for a 1-0 lead.
Akron added to the lead in the third as Chen singled with one out and stole second. Jesus Aguilar singled home Chen making it 2-0.
Erie cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth against Matt Packer. James McCann led off with a single for his third hit of the series. Wade Gaynor tripled home McCann making it a 2-1 game.
Akron held the lead until the top of the eighth when the 'Wolves got to reliever Austin Adams. Eugenio Suarez and Hernan Perez each singled to start the inning. Daniel Fields belted an RBI single up the middle, scoring Suarez, tying the game. With one out, McCann was intentionally walked to load the bases and set up a potential inning-ending double play ball. Gaynor grounded to short but the ball was hit softly enough to where Akron could not turn two as Gaynor beat the throw to first, scoring Perez for a 3-2 Erie lead.
The 'Wolves added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Luis Castillo led off with a single and moved into scoring position on a groundout. Perez singled home Castillo with his third hit of the game for a 4-2 lead.
Justin Souza worked a scoreless ninth inning to lock down his eighth save and preserve the Erie win.
Blaine Hardy (1-1) earned the win for Erie tossing two scoreless, hitless innings in relief of Lobstein.
Lobstein took the no-decision allowing two runs on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts in six innings of work.
The win for the SeaWolves was their second of the season when trailing after seven innings.
The SeaWolves look for the series win on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. against the Aeros. RHP Patrick Cooper (1-3, 5.87 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Paolo Espino (1-0, 4.47 ERA).
