Akron RubberDucks News Release

Akron, OH- The Erie SeaWolves entered Saturday's game against the Akron Aeros ranked first in the EL in pitching and second in hitting. By the end of the game, they showed those rankings to be quite legit.

The Wolves wiped out a 2-1 deficit with a two-run eighth inning rally, and got shutout pitching the final six innings of the game, as they slipped by the Aeros, 4-2, in the middle game of a three game series at Canal Park.

The Aeros (20-22) have split the first two games of the series against the front-running SeaWolves with the rubber game scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 2:05. The Aeros fell to third in the EL West Division, six games off the pace.

The SeaWolves rallied against Aeros righty Austin Adams (0-1) in the eighth. Trailing 2-1 at the time, they greeted Adams with three consecutive singles to lead off the inning, the third of which came off the bat of Daniel Fields and tied the game at 2-2. One out later, with runners on first and third, Wade Gaynor legged out a grounder to short to prevent a double play. That hustle play drove in the go-ahead run.

After being held to one run on five hits through the first seven innings, the SeaWolves (25-15) churned out five more hits over the last two innings. They added an insurance run in the top of the ninth off Bryce Stowell to make it 4-2.

Erie Starter Kyle Lobstein, who threw a complete game victory over the Aeros on May 7th, gave up a pair of early runs, but settled down and worked through six innings. Lefty Blaine Hardy (1-1) took over in the seventh and tossed two perfect innings for the win. Justin Souza pitched the ninth for his eighth save, which ties him for second in the league. The Aeros were held to just one hit over the final six innings.

The lost lead cost Aeros pitcher Matt Packer a win. Packer came into the game in the second after Indians righthander Blake Wood made a one-inning rehab appearance. Packer pitched five innings and scattered five hits. He allowed only one run, and left with a 2-1 lead.

Chun Chen and Jesus Aguilar had RBI hits for the Aeros. Giovanny Urshela was 1-3. Urshela and Chen extended hitting streaks to 12, and 11 games, respectively.

The Aeros and SeaWolves will conclude the series Sunday afternoon at 2:05. RHP Patrick Cooper (1-3, 5.87) will start for Erie, while RHP Paolo Espino (1-0, 4.47) will get the ball for Akron. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1350 AM, and online at www.sportsradio1350.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
