Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, IN September 7, 2015 - Last game of the season for the RailCats happened on a muggy sunny Labor Day at the Steel Yard. However it was one of the most memorable games of the season for the RailCats as they played the rubber match against the Kansas City T-Bones.

Left-handed pitcher Rene Solis took the mound for the RailCats and had a rough going in the first inning. T-Bones right fielder, Starlin Rodriguez started the game off with a triple to deep right center. After that Rodriguez smashed that triple, Vladimir Frias hit a sac fly RBI to center to score the first run of the game. The inning continued with two more singles by Nate Tenbrink and Jake Blackwood. With runners on the corners, Adam Bailey singled to score the second run of the game. Then Kyle Robinson brought them all in with a three-run home run to deep left center. Solis then worked out of the jam, and ended the inning with 5 runs, a strikeout, and faced eight batters. The bottom of the first for the RailCats started out with a double by rookie Anthony Cheky, who later scored on Adam Taylor's RBI single. The score at the end of the first was 5-1 in favor of the T-Bones.

For the rest of the starters, Solis only gave up two runs for the rest of his time on the mound, and T-Bones starter Drew Gay gave up two runs. Cheky and Devarie's day ended in the fifth when they were replaced by Matt Hibbert and Brennan Metzger. Cheky went 3 for 3, with 2 RBIs and a double to lead off the game.

The rest of the game was pretty smooth, until the bottom of the eighth inning. T-Bones were up 7-4, with Aaron Baker coming in to pitch. Immediately he gave up two singles, a sac bunt, walk, and a questionable hit by pitch. Baker claimed the ball hit Hibbert's bat, not his elbow. T-Bones manager John Massarelli pleaded his case to home plate umpire Mitch Wilson, but to no avail. Taylor then stepped up to the plate, and cleared the bases with a grand slam to left field to give the RailCats a 9-7 lead.

Andy Loomis came into pitch the top of the ninth for the RailCats, which would be his last game in a baseball uniform as he is retiring this year from baseball. He ended his career with two groundouts, gave up two singles, and stuck out one. With his he completed his 19th save of the year, and a great end to an amazing career. A standing ovation for Loomis awaited him after the game was over. RailCats ended the season at 45-55.
