
Birds Finish 2015 Season with 5-1 Win over Joplin on Labor Day

SIOUX FALLS, SD-The Sioux Falls Canaries wrapped up the 2015 season with a 5-1 win over the Joplin Blasters on Monday afternoon in front of 2,954 fans at Sioux Falls Stadium.
The Canaries entered the bottom of the first inning trailing 1-0 before Jerome Pena tied the game up at 1-1 with a two-out solo home run deep over the wall in right. The Canaries took their first lead of the night in the bottom of the third inning when David Bergin doubled of the wall in right-center to bring home Pena. The Canaries carried their 2-1 lead into the bottom of the 8th inning before Brian Humphries hit a towering three-run home run (15) over wall in right to give the Birds' a 5-1 lead.
Pena led the offensive attack for the Birds' in the season finale, going 4-for-4 with a homerun (8) and three runs scored. Bergin ended his season with a .331 batting average after going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Joplin's Mitch Glasser finished the day 0-for-4 at the plate, but had a memorable day in the field, playing in all nine positions in eight innings. Glasser completed the feat by pitching in relief in the bottom of the eighth inning. The right hander made his sixth relief appearance of the season, allowing three runs on three hits, including the Humphries home run.
The Blasters' starting pitcher Matt Parish (2-4, 6.55 ERA) took the loss after allowing two runs on six hits over seven innings.
Canaries starting pitcher Shawn Blackwell (5-9, 3.63 ERA) tossed his third complete game in his last four starts, allowing one run on eight hits.
The Canaries finish the year with a 39-60 record, six more wins than the team finished with in 2014. The Birds were one of the top power hitting teams in the American Association, hitting 80 home runs in 99 games, third most in the league this season.
