Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release

LAFAYETTE, La. – With first place on the line, the Mississippi Sea Wolves jumped past the Louisiana IceGators, by skating away with a 3-2 victory. The first place Sea Wolves now have 36 points compared to 35 for the IceGators.

The game started 55 minutes late, due to Mississippi running into a traffic jam going to Lafayette.

Louisiana (15-7-5) came out flying in the opening minute at the Cajundome. Cal Benazic beat Sean Matile just 33 seconds into the contest, making it 1-0 for the IceGators.

Mississippi (17-9-2) bounced back on the power play 13:36. Jim Baxter let go with a right circle shot, Kent Davyduke re-directed it past Frederic Cloutier. Davyduke's 10th of the year and third in three games with the Sea Wolves, tied the score 1-1.

The Sea Wolves continued their red-hot play with the man advantage at 16:44. Steffon Walby took a pass from Davyduke and bulged the twine. Walby's 11th of the campaign gave Mississippi a 2-1 lead through 20 minutes.

There was no scoring in the middle stanza, with Mississippi outshooting Louisiana 26-18 after two periods.

In the third, Sea Wolves Darryl Campbell tipped in a Baxter shot and scoring the eventual game-winner, giving Mississippi a 3-1 advantage.

Louisiana pulled goaltender Cloutier and IceGators' Shawn McNeil tallied his league high 19th goal of the year, with just 15 seconds remaining in regulation to complete the scoring.

Despite the loss, Louisiana continues to lead the season series, 5-3.

The game was the 100th pro game coached by Sea Wolves bench boss Bob Woods during the regular season. Woods is in his second season behind the Mississippi bench and has guided the Sea Wolves to a 58-35-7 record and .615 winning percentage over that time.
