
Sea Dogs Swept in Doubleheader by Binghamton

Binghamton, New York- The Portland Sea Dogs (36-23) dropped both games of the twin bill to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (29-29) on Thursday night. Niko Kavadas and Marcelo Mayer blasted home runs while Chase Meidroth extended his on base streak to twenty games despite the pair of losses. With the pair of losses, the Sea Dogs fall out of first place in the Northeast Division and are 1.5 games behind the Somerset Patriots.
In game one, Binghamton began the scoring in the top of the second with an RBI single from Wyatt Young. A wild pitch with the bases loaded brought home Joe Suozzi before an RBI ground out from Rowdey Jordan rounded out the three-run inning.
Tyler Dearden put Portland on the board in the top of the third with an RBI groundout to score Phillip Sikes.
An RBI single from Suozzi extended the 4-1 Binghamton lead in the bottom of the inning.
With a walk in the top of the fourth, Chase Meidroth extended his on base streak to twenty games. One run came across as Nathan Hickey recorded an RBI single to score Marcelo Mayer and cut the lead in half.
A solo home run from Suozzie in the bottom of the fifth put Binghamton up 5-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Brandon McIlwain homered to center field to plate two and Binghamton led, 7-2.
Nick Yorke hit a sacrifice deep to center field with the bases loaded to bring home Tyler Dearden but Portland trailed, 7-3.
Binghamton starter RHP Luis Moreno (4-2, 5.53 ERA) earned the win after pitching 6.0 innings allowing two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out ten. RHP Wyatt Olds (0-3, 10.17 ERA) was issued the loss after pitching 1.1 innings allowing four runs on four hits while walking three and striking out three.
In game two, Niko Kavadas put Portland on the board in the top of the second with a solo home run to record his eleventh of the season.
A solo home run from Matt O'Neill in the bottom of the second evened the score.
Rowdy Jordan hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third to put Binghamton on top, 3-1.
Marcelo Mayer launched a solo home run deep to right center field to record his third home run of the season and Portland trailed by one, 3-2.
Binghamton starter RHP Christian Scott (1-0, 1.50 ERA) earned the win after pitching 6.0 innings allowing one run on two hits while striking out nine. He did not issue a walk. LHP Matt Minnick (1) earned the save after pitching 1.0 inning allowing one run on one hit while striking out two. He did not issue a walk. Portland starter RHP CJ Liu (4-4, 4.18 ERA) was issued the loss after pitching 3.1 innings allowing three runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out three.
The Sea Dogs return to Mirabito Stadium tomorrow, June 16, 2023 for game three of a six-game series against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. First pitch for game three is slated for 7:05pm. Portland will send RHP Grant Gambrell (1-1, 2.60 ERA)(0-2, 9.25 ERA) to the mound while Binghamton will start RHP Dom Hamel (2-3, 4.96 ERA).
