
Sea Dogs Scoreless in Loss

Reading, PA) - Reading's (58-46) pitchers retired the final 14 batters in a 2-0 victory of the Portland Sea Dogs (50-54) on Thursday night at First Energy Stadium. The Sea Dogs were held to just three hits and dropped 3 of 4 in the series to the Phillies.
RHP Vance Worley (7-8) worked six scoreless innings on three hits, two walks and fanned two to earn the win for Reading. The righty stranded five and escaped two jams when the âDogs had two runners on and less than two outs. RHP Scott Mathieson tossed two perfect innings to earn a hold and LHP Sergio Escalona notched his 11th save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Portland starter RHP Ryne Lawson (2-9) worked the first 5 innings and scattered six hits, two runs, three walks and fanned two but suffered the loss. LHP Tommy Hottovy fanned three over 2 perfect innings of relief and RHP Chad Rhoades worked a scoreless eighth.
Reading's DH Jeremy Slayden (2-for-4, HR, RBI) led off the fourth inning with a homer over the left-field wall to give Reading a 1-0 lead. Slayden blasted his 9th homer in just 118 at-bats this season. In the fifth inning, SS Ozzie Chavez (0-for-2, BB) led off with a walk and scored on LF Michael Spidale's (1-for-4, RBI) RBI double to give Reading a 2-0 advantage.
CF Josh Reddick (double), RF Reid Engel (double) and 3B Jorge Jimenez picked up the hits for the Sea Dogs, who were shutout for the 11th time this season.
Portland opens up a 3-game weekend series in Harrisburg on Friday night beginning at 7:00 PM. RHP Adam Mills looks for his 6th straight win and will go opposite LHP Matt Chico. Notes...Portland needs on a win on Friday night to finish the month at .500 (currently 14-15)...LF Ryan Kalish had his hitting streak snapped at 10 games...The Sea Dogs were retired in order in 5 of 8 innings after reaching base safely in 25 of 27 innings during the first 3 games...Mathieson was making his first appearance of the season for Reading after having Tommy John Surgery in September of 2007.
