July 30, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- David Cooper extended his hitting streak to five games by ripping a first-inning RBI double, and relievers Matt Hensley and Edgar Estanga combined for 4.1 frames of shutout baseball, but an unearned run allowed the New Britain Rock Cats to edge the Fisher Cats, 2-1, before a standing-room-only crowd of 6,626 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
Cooper (1-for-4, 2B, RBI) lined a two-out, opposite-field double off Mike McCardell in the bottom of the first inning to score Brad Emaus (1-for-3, BB, R) all the way from first base, staking New Hampshire (49-56) to a 1-0 lead.
The Rock Cats (51-54) evened the score, 1-1, against Kenny Rodriguez in the top of the fourth when Luke Hughes (2-for-4, BB, RBI) singled off the right field wall, scoring Rene Tosoni (1-for-5, R), who had singled.
New Britain scored the deciding run in the top of the fifth. After the Rock Cats loaded the bases against Rodriguez with two outs, Danny Lehmann (0-for-3, BB) grounded to third baseman Bryan Kervin. Kervin had the ball dislodge from his glove while tagging Steve Singleton (1-for-4), allowing Juan Portes (2-for-4, R) to score.
McCardell (1-1) allowed one run on three hits and a walk in five innings to record his first career Eastern League win. Carlos Gutierrez, Alex Burnett and Anthony Slama held the Fisher Cats to no runs on two hits in four innings out of the bullpen, with Slama notching four strikeouts in 1.1 innings to record his 21st save of the season.
Rodriguez (1-3) suffered the hard-luck loss, yielding two runs -one earned- on six hits and six walks in 4.2 innings. The righty fanned three.
New Hampshire still took three out of four games in the series and won the season series with New Britain, 12-7.
The Fisher Cats open a three-game weekend series against the Connecticut Defenders at Dodd Stadium on Friday night at 6:35pm with New Hampshire left-hander Troy Cate (0-0, 0.00) making his Fisher Cats' debut against Connecticut right-hander Daryl Maday (4-3, 3.66). Radio coverage begins with the BayRing Pre-Game Show at 6:15pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy.
