Sea Dogs manage split with 9-5 win

The Portland Sea Dogs managed a split of their four-game series with the New Britain Rock Cats, taking Monday afternoon's contest at Hadlock Field, 9-5. Portland wins the final two games of the series after dropping the previous two and holds on to first place in the Northern Division.

Portland scored five unearned runs off losing pitcher Glen Perkins (1-5) with four coming in the first three innings. Chad Spann blasted a two-run homer in the third inning to extend the 'Dogs lead to 3-0. Jeremy West added a Maine Monster blast to lead off the fourth inning, his first home run since April 14 against Binghamton at Hadlock Field.

The Rock Cats rallied back from two 5-run deficits, scoring three times in the sixth inning to climb within 6-4. Portland added insurance with a three-run seventh inning on an RBI double by Moss and a two-run single by Alberto Concepcion.

Chris Smith (5-3) allowed 10 hits and four runs over five-plus innings to earn the win for Portland. Mike Bumatay notched his first hold with the Sea Dogs, working two and 1/3 innings on one hit and one run. Devern Hansack closed out the game with an inning and 2/3 scoreless. In the eighth inning, New Britain brought the tying run to the plate but Hansack retired Matt Moses and Alex Romero to end the threat.

Notes...Smith and Kason Gabbard lead the team with five wins...Portland had a base runner in seven of eight innings...New Britain had a hit in eight of nine innings...Luis Jimenez is 4-for-9 since being activated from the disabled list.
