Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine - William Cuevas held the Fisher Cats scoreless for five innings and the Sea Dogs (38-63) held on to defeat the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (50-47) 2-1 on Saturday night at Hadlock Field. The Sea Dogs have won three games in a row and six of their last seven.
Cuevas and Austin Bibens-Dirkx (L, 3-5) faced off as the starting pitchers and both were impressive. Cuevas allowed just three hits in five scoreless innings, walking three and striking out four. Bibens-Dirkx worked a quality start, going 6.2 innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits, walking three and striking out four.
The Sea Dogs got on the board in the sixth. After Manuel Margot led off the inning with a single, Carlos Asuaje bunted him over to second base. Sam Travis then delivered an RBI single to left field and Margot slid in safely just ahead of the throw from Ryan Schimpf.
New Hampshire quickly answered in the top of the seventh off of Williams Jerez. Christian Lopes worked a leadoff walk and was sacrificed over to second base by Roemon Fields. After Shane Opitz lined out, Kevin Nolan came through with a two-out, RBI single to score Lopes and tie the game.
The Sea Dogs responded in the bottom of the seventh off of Bibens-Dirkx. After a leadoff walk to Tzu-Wei Lin, Keury De La Cruz hit a hot shot to first base that ate up KC Hobson and ricocheted into shallow right field, allowing Lin to score from second base on the error.
Williams Jerez (W, 1-0) picked up his first Double-A win with two innings of relief for Portland. Madison Younginer (S, 2) shut the door for the 'Dogs, working the final two innings and allowing just one hit to pick up his second save of the season.
The series concludes tomorrow afternoon as the Sea Dogs go for the sweep. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM. Justin Haley (3-11, 5.49) will make the start for Portland against Casey Lawrence (10-8, 4.40) of the Fisher Cats. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by phone at 207-879-9500 or online at seadogs.com.
