Portland Sea Dogs News Release
TRENTON, NJ - The Sea Dogs (36-18) made it two straight one-run wins, taking the opener of a four-game series from the Trenton Thunder (30-25), 4-3 on Friday night at Arm & Hammer Park. Portland improved to 21-10 this month, clinching their best May in franchise history. The Sea Dogs have now won four straight over Trenton in the season series.
Friday's win did not disappoint, displaying plenty of drama in the ninth inning. Robby Scott, bidding for his first Double-A save retired Gary Sanchez on a force out with the bases loaded to end the game. Trenton picked up two hits and a walk after two outs, but Sanchez sent the first pitch right to SS Deven Marrero to force Tyler Austin at second base.
RHP Michael Olmsted (2-0) tossed two scoreless innings on one hit and fanned one to earn the win. LHP Tyler Webb (1-2) took the loss, yielding the game-winning run in the eighth inning.
With the game tied at three, LF Bo Greenwell (2-for-3) drew a bases-loaded walk for the game-winner. Blake Swihart and Sean Coyle (2-for-3) had consecutive singles before the Greenwell walk.
Trenton grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning off LHP Brian Johnson (no-decision). Ben Gamel singled and scored on a two-out double by Sanchez.
Portland took a 2-1 lead off starter RHP Bryan Mitchell in the third. Stefan Welch (3-for4) nailed a run-scoring single and Matt Spring delivered a sacrifice fly. The 'Dogs added a run in the fourth on a fielder's choice by Heiker Meneses.
Johnson would hit a small bump in the fourth inning. Peter O'Brien hit the first pitch over the left-field wall for his 10thhomer (20th overall between High-A Tampa and Trenton). Rob Refysnder doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Carmen Angelini. Johnson retired the final six batters faced and worked six strong innings. The lefty gave up five hits, three runs (two earned) on three walks and seven strikeouts.
Coyle, Greenwell, Peter Hissey and Welch each had multi-hits for Portland. Trenton finished 0-for-10 with runners-in-scoring position.
The Sea Dogs and Trenton Thunder continue their four-game, three-day series against Saturday with a day-night, split doubleheader at 2:05 PM and 7:05 PM from Arm & Hammer Park. Portland is slated to send RHP Keith Couch (6-0, 2.22) to the mound against a Trenton pitcher to be named later.
