New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
ALTOONA, Pa. - Jorge Flores singled home Andy Burns in the top of the 12th inning on Friday night, lifting the Fisher Cats to a 1-0 series-opening win over the Altoona Curve. The 1-0 tally was their second by that score this week, and gives the team three wins in its last six games.
Neither team managed much offense through the regulation nine innings. Fisher Cats starter Radhames Liz kept the Curve scoreless through 5.1 innings, recording eight strikeouts in his second outing with New Hampshire. He was matched by Altoona starter Adrian Sampson, who worked eight scoreless for the Curve.
Each team came close to breaking the scoreless tie in regulation. For the Fisher Cats (19-35), Andy Burns was at first base when Michael Crouse singled to right. Burns went to third, and then tried to score when the right fielder held on to the ball. Will Garcia, playing right field, eventually recovered in time to nail Burns on a sliding play at the plate.
In the ninth, the Curve (20-34) nearly scored. Keon Broxton was at second base when a fly ball drove Matt Newman to deep right field. Broxton tagged up and was waved round third when Newman couldn't get it into the infield. Eventually, just like in the seventh, the Fisher Cats recovered and executive a perfect relay to nip Broxton at home and send the game to extras.
That's when Flores came through. Batting with one out, Flores lined a single to right field with Burns at second base. Garcia tried to come up throwing, but had the ball go under his glove, which allowed Burns to score without a throw for the game's lone run.
Dustin Antolin (W, 1-3), the fifth of six Fisher Cats pitchers, earned the win by tossing a scoreless eleventh. Randy Boone (S, 4) worked a scoreless 12th to earn his fourth straight save.
The game's outcome may have turned out differently. On the play in the seventh inning when Burns was thrown out at the plate, Fisher Cats manager Bobby Meacham filed a protest saying that Altoona's catcher illegally blocked home plate without the baseball, thereby preventing Burns from scoring. With the victory, the protest was dropped by the Fisher Cats.
The series now moves to game 2 on Saturday night at 6 p.m. Right-hander P.J. Walters will make his Fisher Cats debut against Altoona righty Nick Kingham (1-5, 3.00). Radio coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. with Tom Gauthier on WGIR 610 AM and www.nhfishercats.com.
The Fisher Cats return home to begin a six-game stand against Bowie and Erie on Tuesday, June 3 at 7:05 p.m. The homestand will feature two fireworks shows, an educational day morning game, and two giveaways. Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com, at the Fisher Cats ticket office, and by calling (603) 641-2005.
