Sea Dogs Drop Series Finale to Fisher Cats

Portland, Maine - Brandon Walter hurled five scoreless innings, striking out seven, in a 6-2 loss for the Portland Sea Dogs (1-2) in the series finale against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (2-1) on Sunday at Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine.

For the first six innings both teams were locked into a pitchers duel. Walter worked through the first five innings, striking out seven and giving up only one hit in a no-decision for the Sea Dogs. On the other side, Haden Juenger and Paxton Schultz combined for seven scoreless innings and 12 strikeouts.

Eventually, the Fisher Cats broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning against Sea Dogs reliever Joan Martinez. Rafael Lantigua led off with a double and advanced to third on a Spencer Horwitz base hit. In the next at-bat, Zac Cook walked to load the bases. Phil Clarke stepped up to the plate, clearing the bases with a double and giving New Hampshire a 3-0 lead. The Fisher Cats added another run on a Luis De Los Santos RBI single, expanding their lead to 4-0.

New Hampshire entered the scoring column again in the top of the eighth against Portland reliever Darin Gillies. Tanner Morris and Lantigua led off with singles, putting runners at first and second. Horwitz drove them both in with a double to center, increasing the Fisher Cats advantage to 6-0.

In the bottom of the ninth against Fisher Cats reliever Hagen Danner, the Sea Dogs brought in their first runs of the game. After the first two batters went down in order, Brandon Howlett walked to get things started. Cameron Cannon singled, advancing Howlett to second. In the next at-bat, Hudson Potts walked, loading the bases. Kole Cottam stepped up to the plate and laced a single to center, scoring Howlett and Cannon to make the score 6-2. That was all the offense Portland could muster, falling to New Hampshire 6-2.

Schultz (1-0) tossed 4.0 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out five in his first victory of the season. Joan Martinez (0-1) pitched 1.0 inning, surrendering four runs on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk in his first loss of the year.

The Sea Dogs enjoy a league-wide off day on Monday before hitting the road to take on the Harrisburg Senators. They play the first of a six-game series on Tuesday with first pitch set for 6:30 PM ET.
