
Sea Dogs Can't Defend Connecticut's Offense, Lose 10-4

(Portland, ME) - Conneticut's DH Andrew D'Alessio drove in four runs and the Defenders collected 14 hits, taking game three of the series from the Sea Dogs, 10-4 on Saturday afternoon at Hadlock Field. Portland has dropped two of three in the series and look for the split on Sunday afternoon. RF Eddy Martinez-Esteve and C Adam Witter hit back-to-back homers in the fifth inning and knocked in two.
RHP Steven Edlefsen (1-0) allowed a run over 2.1 IP but earned the win in his first appearance of the season. RHP Travis Beazley (0-1) was touched for six runs and seven hits over 4.2 IP to take the loss in his Double-A debut. Beazley gave up the back-to-back homers in the fifth inning to Martinez-Esteve and Witter.
CF Josh Reddick went 2-for-5 and hit an 8th inning home run for the second straight day. The Sea Dogs took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on 3B Jorge Jimenez's 2-run double off starter Nick Pereira (3+, 4 H, 2 R). After Jimenez's two-base hit, the Sea Dogs had only two baserunners through five innings. Connecticut chipped into Portland's lead in the second inning on LF Bobby Felmy's run-scoring ground out. The visitors took the lead (3-2) for good in the fourth inning with D'Alessio's 2-run single to left field.
Leading 6-2 after five frames, the Defenders added their seventh run off Portland reliever Blake Maxwell. CF Mike Mooney singled, stole second base and scored on 3B Sharlon Schoop's first Double-A hit (double to left field). 'Dogs reliever Chad Rhoades was touched for two runs in the seventh inning on D'Alessio's 2-run double and yielded an RBI double to Witter in the eighth.
The Sea Dogs and Defenders close out their 4-game series on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field. RHP Ryne Lawson will make his first start of the season for the Sea Dogs. RHP Jesse Foppert gets the ball for Connecticut.
Notes...RHP T.J. Large made his first appearance of the year and did not allow a run over 1.2 IP...Portland's bullpen yielded their first two walks of the season...Connecticut had five players with multi-hit games: Witter, Brett Pill, Felmy, Mooney and D'Alessio...Aaron Bates had two hits and scored a run for Portland in his third straight start in left field...RF Reid Engel made his Double-A debut but went 0-for-4.
