New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

Manchester, NH- Adam Calderone blasted his first home run of the season, but the New Hampshire Fisher Cats suffered their first loss of the year, dropping a 5-1 decision to the New Britain Rock Cats before a crowd of 3,372 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Saturday afternoon. New Hampshire takes Easter Sunday off after winning three out of four games from New Britain in the first series of the 2009 season.

The Rock Cats (1-3) seized a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning against losing pitcher Luis Perez when Juan Portes (2-for-5, R, SB) singled, stole second base and scored on a double by Allan De San Miguel (1-for-3, 2B, BB, RBI, R). De San Miguel scored the second run of the inning on a Kyle Phillips throwing error, allowing Steve Tolleson (0-for-5) to reach with two outs.

Perez's wildness allowed New Britain to add a run in the top of the fifth inning. Danny Valencia (1-for-2, 2 BB, HBP, R) walked and came around to score later in the frame when Perez uncorked a bases-loaded wild pitch, giving the Rock Cats a 3-0 lead.

Winning pitcher Cole Devries retired the first 10 Fisher Cats hitters and faced the minimum through the first 5.1 innings. But Devries' first pitch to Calderone (1-for-3, HR) was drilled onto the access road in right field, spoiling the shutout bid.

Jonathan Diaz (0-for-2, BB) walked, Todd Donovan (1-for-4) singled and Brian Jeroloman (1-for-3, BB) walked to load the bases, bringing Rob Delaney out of the Rock Cats bullpen. Delaney induced an inning-ending double-play grounder, keeping the score 3-1.

In the top of the seventh inning, Wilson Ramos (3-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) put the game away with a towering two-run home run, his first, off reliever Celson Polanco that settled in the left field Poultry Products Dinner in the Den for a 5-1 Rock Cats' lead.

Devries (1-0) worked 5.1 innings, holding New Hampshire (3-1) to one run on three hits. The right-hander, making his Eastern League debut, struck out three and walked two.

Delaney and Anthony Slama combined for 3.2 innings of perfect relief to give New Britain its first victory of the season.

Perez (0-1) took the loss after yielding three runs -two earned- on six hits in five innings. The left-hander struck out five and walked three.

The Fisher Cats open a three-game series at Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Monday night at 6:35pm against the Connecticut Defenders. Left-hander Marc Rzepczynski (1-0, 1.80) gets his second start of the season. Radio coverage begins with the BayRing Communications Pre-Game Show on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network at 6:15pm with Mike Murphy and Bob Lipman.
