Chesapeake Baysox News Release

AKRON, Ohio - The Aeros once again took advantage of free passes and the Baysox made four errors on their way to dropping their third game of the opening four-game set in Akron. All but one starter for the Aeros drew a walk and scored 12 runs on just six hits to take down the Baysox 12-2.

Akron struck first in the bottom of the second inning when Brandon Erbe issued free passes to Carlos Santana, Nick Weglarz and Jared Goedert to start the inning. Josh Rodriguez then hit a chopper to third which Jonathan Tucker mishandled, scoring a run and leaving the bases loaded. Erbe then walked John Drennen to force in another run before inducing Damaso Espino to ground into a double play to score the Aeros third run of the inning without ever recording a hit.

The Baysox came back in the top half of the third inning when Paco Figueroa and Jonathan Tucker lined back-to-back singles with one out. Brandon Snyder followed with a line drive into the left-center field gap for an RBI double, extending his hitting streak to four games. Another run came across when Ambiorix Concepcion hit into a fielders choice to bring the Baysox within one at 3-2.

The Aeros answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning as they once again took advantage of mistakes by the Baysox pitching and defense. Fredy Deza came on in relief of Erbe, walking two of the first three men he faced before giving up an RBI double to John Drennen which plated Nick Weglarz. Damaso Espino followed with an RBI groundout to extend the Aeros lead to three. Jose Constanza then bounced a ball past first baseman Brandon Snyder down the right field line and all the way down into the right field corner scoring another run. The speedy Constanza slid safely into third as the relay throw from shortstop Melvin Dorta bounced away allowing Constanza to score on the error making the score 7-2.

The Baysox managed just two hits after the third inning and were held hitless through the final four frames as the Aeros Erik Stiller, Randy Newsom and Michael Finocchi combined to pitch four scoreless innings in relief of starter Steven Wright. The Aeros added to their lead again in the bottom of the seventh inning once again taking advantage of extra outs. After a single by Constanza, pinch-runner Mickey Hall advanced to second on a botched pickoff attempt by Baysox reliever James Hoey. After a walk to Carlos Rivero and a strikeout of Nick Weglarz, Carlos Santana roped a single between second and third plating Hall to give the Aeros another run making it 8-2.

The eighth inning was no better for the Baysox bullpen as Ryan Keefer came on and once again was bitten by an inability to throw strikes. Keefer walked Jared Goedert and gave up a single to Josh Rodriguez before plunking John Drennen and forcing in a run with another walk to Damaso Espino. Mickey Hall then stepped in for an injured Constanza and singled down the left field line scoring two more. After a wild pitch by Keefer, Carlos Rivero went down swinging before Beau Mills drew the third walk of the inning. Chad Thall came on to replace Keefer and got out of the jam, but not before giving up a sacrifice fly to make the score 12-2.

In the series, the Baysox walked 32 in just 33 innings of work, something Manager Brad Komminsk is looking to change as they travel to Erie to begin a three game set with the SeaWolves starting Monday.

"We need to make the other team swing the bats," said Komminsk, "When we do that we've been pretty successful." One of the bright spots in the series was Brandon Snyder, who has hit safely in every game this season and has driven in five runs so far during the 2009 campaign.

"Brandon has a pretty good approach to the plate," added Komminsk, "Working the middle of the field and going the other way which has allowed him to be pretty successful so far."

The Baysox have an off day tomorrow and will look to get back to their winning ways as lefty Bobby Livingston takes the mound Monday. He'll be going up against SeaWolves right-hander Luis Marte.

The Baysox 17th season as the class AA affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles is underway! The team will play its first game at Prince George's Stadium on Thursday, April 16.
