SAINT JOHN, Dec 19, 2005 - The Saint John Sea Dogs have obtained Luc Melanson from the Shawinigan Cataractes in exchange for a 6th round draft pick in 2006.

The 6', 200 lb., left wing has appeared in eight games for Shawinigan this season and has no points. He was selected by the Cataractes this past summer in the 6th round of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League entry draft.

The 17-year-old Melanson played in 2004-05 for the Miramichi Timberwolves of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League where he recorded 21 points (13g, 8a) and 33 penalty minutes in 53 games. He is a native of Moncton.

"We felt we had to add size and grit and Luc will fit that mold for the future," said Bob "Tipper" LeBlanc, general manager of the Sea Dogs.

To make room for Melanson, the Sea Dogs have released centre Francis Marchand, a 16th round expansion draft pick.

Saint John is back in action at Harbour Station on Dec. 27 when they will host the PEI Rocket.
