Trenton Devils News Release
Trenton NJ - In a game featuring five fights and 98 total penalty minutes, Cincinnati's Scott Lehman broke a 1-1 tie 11:09 into the second period to give the Cyclones a lead they never relinquished Sunday afternoon. Cincinnati extended its lead with three third-periods goals to defeat Trenton 5-1 at Sun National Bank Center to earn a split in the teams' two-game season series.
The visiting Cincinnati Cyclones never trailed Sunday, opening the scoring with an early goal by Brett Robinson 1:34 into the first period. Robinson beat Devils goalie Mike Brown by firing a quick shot into the top corner after a scramble in front of the net left the Devils goalie searching for the loose puck.
Following Cincinnati's early score, the physical play picked up as players from both teams took the body every chance they got. Five separate fights broke out during the game with Trenton's J.S. Berube and Jordon Southorn each dropping the gloves twice. Berube's two majors were the first of his pro career.
With emotions running high, the Devils were awarded a five-minute power play when Cincinnati's Carl Hudson hit Ryan Hayes from behind late in the first period. On the power play, a Justin Pender slap shot was stopped by Cyclones goaltender Marc Cheverie, but the rebound bounced right to Matt Vokes, who finished the play with his first score since March 28 of last season. Moments later, Matt Lombardi had two unsuccessful breakaway chances and the teams skated into their locker rooms tied at one
The second period's only scoring occurred when Scott Lehman notched the eventual game-winning goal at 11:09. The power play goal occurred with Trenton down one skater after the Devils had killed off the five-on-three portion of Cincinnati's power play.
With a slim 2-1 lead entering the third period, Cincinnati broke the game open with Sam D'Agostino, Barret Ehgoetz and Chris Clackson delivering goals to put the game out of reach for Trenton. Marc Cheverie turned aside 20 shots in recording his seventh win of the season. Brown made 29 saves in defeat for the Devils.
Trenton finishes the week with a record of 2-2-0, alternating wins and losses throughout the four games. The Devils are off on Monday as they travel to Toledo in preparation for Wednesday night's game against the Walleye and Thursday night's matchup in Wheeling. Trenton returns home for its sixth meeting of the season with Reading next Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
