Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - In the finale of a three-game series at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, the Victoria Salmon Kings looked for the first win of the set versus the Idaho Steelheads on Saturday night. The Salmon Kings' Daren Machesney received his first start of the series between the pipes while the Steelheads' Mike Zacharias started his third consecutive game.

A fast paced first period saw the Salmon Kings get off to a quick start as they outshot Idaho 7-0 to begin the game. That perseverance paid off as Victoria opened the scoring at the 15:52 mark of the first period. Chad Painchaud broke into the zone down the right wing and passed the puck to Matt Siddall in the slot. The North Vancouver native slipped a shot through the legs of Zacharias for the 1-0 lead. The tally was Siddall's seventh of the season. The Kings continued to pour on the pressure and were rewarded a mere 1:36 later when Siddall notched his second goal of the game. After receiving a pass from Rob Hennigar, Siddall let a laser beam go that went top shelf for the 2-0 advantage. Idaho would respond less than a minute later when Michael Neal found a loose puck in the crease and slid it by Machesney. The goal was Neal's third of the year. The period was controlled by Victoria through solid forechecking and solid neutral-zone play and they were rewarded as they took a 2-1 lead into the second frame.

Idaho would start the second period on the power play. Mark Derlago walked out of the right wing corner and fired a shot at the net, Machesney made the initial save, but Derlago would follow his shot and pop the rebound past the Kings' keeper to even the score a mere 41 seconds into the period. Kael Mouillierat notched his 10th of the season, and the Steelheads second power play goal of the night, at the 2:17 mark when he found a rebound at the bottom of the right face-off circle and shot the puck into the net. Idaho extended their lead to 4-1 at 6:49 when Derlago recorded his second of the game after he deflected Mouillierat's initial point shot past Machesney. Salmon Kings' defenseman Gord Burnett looked to spark his team and the Save-On-Foods Memorial faithful when he fought Adam Huxley in the moments following Derlago's second goal. Both combatants landed a series of punches and went off to a rousing ovation. The Kings tried to ride the emotional wave from the Burnett tussle, but were unable to connect on two consecutive power play opportunities as Zacharias made a handful of top end saves to deny the Victoria snipers. Idaho would realize a late power play, and again the Steelheads would make the Salmon Kings pay. This time Matt Tassone scored after he received a pass through the slot from Cody Purves. As the final seconds of the period were ticking off the clock tempers again flared after Huxley fired a shot at Machesney after the whistle had blown. Siddall and the other Kings on the ice went after Huxley, but the linesman kept the players at bay. On the power of four second period goals the Steelheads led 5-2 through 40 minutes.

The third period saw the Salmon Kings try to claw their way back into the game. A series of rushes and shots were thwarted by the Steelheads. The two teams continued to play hard in the third frame with several big hits being dished out. Idaho struck again with the man advantage. Neal netted his second goal of the game after he received the puck on the right hash mark and fired it past Machesney blocker side. The Salmon Kings kept pushing and scored their third goal late in the period when Hennigar deflected Siddall's initial shot from the left boards past Zacharias. That would round out the scoring. Steelhead 6 Salmon Kings 3.

The Salmon Kings now host the Stockon Thunder in a three-game series on Wednesday December 1st, Friday December 3rd and Saturday December 4th. Game time is at 7:05 pm for all three games. Victoria will be holding their fifth annual Teddy Bear toss during Saturday night's game.
