Scrappy K-Wings Fall Short in Comeback Bid
December 5, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
ELMIRA, NY- The Kalamazoo Wings battled until the final horn, but fell short in a comeback bid against the Elmira Jackals, 3-1, on Saturday at First Arena.
The first period was highlighted by scoring chances from both clubs, but it was the goaltenders who stole the show. Clay Witt, who was making his third start for Kalamazoo on the season, made ten first-period saves, as did his counterpart, Elmira goalie C.J. Motte.
The second period started as a carbon copy of the first, with both goalies commanding the spotlight. However, it was the Jackals who struck first with a power play tally at 15:19 of the period. Zach Tolkinen corralled a loose puck at the top of the left circle and snapped a shot that snuck through the pads of Witt and into the goal. The goal snapped a streak of 14-straight penalties killed by the Wings.
Minutes later and operating on their fourth power play of the second period, the Jackals would pad their lead with a tally from Allan McPherson. The forward situated himself near the Kalamazoo goal and deflected a shot by Spiro Goulakos that lit the lamp. It was McPherson's third point in three games against Kalamazoo this season.
The Wings cut the deficit in half midway through the third period, courtesy of Tanner Sorenson. Lane Scheidl stole the puck and wrapped it behind the Elmira goal to Justin Kovacs, who steered the puck to Sorenson for his fifth goal of the season.
After generating a series of chances late in the frame, Kalamazoo's comeback bid fell short after Mike Seidel buried an empty netter with 58 seconds remaining.
Notes: Kalamazoo will cap off their four-game road trip in Brampton, Ontario, as the Wings and Beast will face off at 2 p.m. from the Powerade Centre (radio: AM 590 WKZO). Kalamazoo went 1-2-0-0 against Elmira in their three game series over four days. Elmira is 11-0-0-0 when leading after two periods of play. Witt tied a career high with 34 stops.
