Colorado Eagles News Release

(ANCHORAGE, AK) -- Colorado scored three unanswered goals in the third period to draw within one, but surrendered an empty-net goal in the closing seconds to fall 6-4 to the Alaska Aces at Sullivan Arena on Friday.

Alaska wasted no time getting on the board, as they won the opening face-off and hit forward Garet Hunt on a rush down the left wing, Hunt fired a wrister past emergency back-up goaltender Tate Maris to give the Aces the 1-0 lead just nine seconds into the contest.

Later in the first, with defenseman Colin Joe in the penalty box on a boarding minor, Aces forward Collin Valcourt found a rebound off a shot from defenseman Daniel Johnston, stuffing the puck home to make it 2-0 Alaska with only 3:45 gone in the opening frame.

The Aces took the 2-0 lead into the second period and they would once again strike early. Forward Peter Sivak entered the Eagles zone, dropping a pass to fellow forward Tim Coffman setting up a wrister from Coffman that would light the lamp just 1:41 into the middle frame.

Colorado would start to find some sustained pressure as the period continued and with the Eagles on a powerplay, forward Darryl Bootland fed a cross-slot pass to forward Trent Daavettila which the Eagles captain drove home to pull the Eagles back within two and to close out the first 40 minutes of action.

Alaska would not be held off the board for long as a shot from the slot from Valcourt would be deflected on top of the crease by forward Ben Lake, giving the Aces a 4-1 advantage 6:22 into the third. The lead would grow to 5-1 as forward Anthony Deluca would cruise into the Colorado zone and fire a wrist shot top-shelf with less than 11 minutes to play in the third.

The Eagles would strike back, as defenseman Collin Bowman drove a shot from the high-slot past Aces goaltender Steven Summerhays, cutting the lead to 5-2. Less than two minutes later Bootland deflected a centering pass in the low-slot into the net and bringing Colorado to within two. The Eagles would pull Maris with three minutes left and the extra attacker would pay off. With the puck fluttering in the air during a net-mouth scramble, forward Giffen Nyren would dive across the crease and smack the puck into the back of the net to slice the Aces lead to 5-4.

Colorado would keep Maris pulled in favor of the extra attacker, but Aces defenseman William Wrenn found a loose puck and shot it down the ice into the empty net to give Alaska the 6-4 win.

The Eagles close out their three-game series against the Aces on Saturday with the opening face-off set for 9:15pm MST at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage.

Tickets for groups of 15 or more start at just $14 per seat and can be purchased by calling the Eagles ticket office at 970-686-SHOT (7468).
