
Scrappers Split a Pair in Staten Island

Staten Island, NY- Playing in their 3rd double header of the season, the Scrappers needed a little time to wake up. The dropped game 1 by a final of 3-0, but woke the bats up big time for game 2. After being shutout in game 1, they beat up the Staten Island Yankees for a 7-3 win in the nightcap.
Game 1 was a true pitcher's duel. A scoreless game until the 4th inning, Staten Island scored all their runs courtesy of an error, wild pitch and a double. Jose Rosario led off the inning by hitting a fly ball to rightfield. Juan Romero was unable to secure the catch as the ball bounced off his glove allowing Rosario to reach. A single from Daniel Lopez put runners on the corners. A double from Bubba Jones made the score 2-0. After advancing on a groundout, Jones scored the final run of the game on a wild pitch.
Caleb Hamrick (1-5) started for the Scrappers and worked 4 innings. He allowed just 4 hits while walking 2 and striking out 4. Hamrick allowed all 3 runs, but just 1 was earned. Ben Heller relieved Hamrick and pitched a near perfect 2 innings. Heller's only blemish was a 2 out single by Yeicok Calderon. Heller ended his outing allowing just 1 hit and striking out 5. Charles Haslup (1-0) worked 2 innings for Staten Island to pick up the win.
Game 2 got off to a quick start for the Scrappers. With 1 out, Claudio Bautista doubled. Juan Herrera followed with a single. With runners at the corners, Nellie Rodriguez delivered and RBI single. James Roberts followed with an RBI single of his own. Robel Garica's sac fly would score the 3rd run of the inning for Mahoning Valley. The Scrappers added 2 more in the 4th inning when Garcia scored from 2nd on a fielder's choice off the bat of Sicnarf Loopstok. Loopstok reached base and scored himself after and error and a groundout allowed Joel Mejia to beat out an infield single. The finishing touches were added by Rodriguez in the 5th. Herrera doubled off the wall in rightfield to start the inning. On the very next pitch, Rodriguez drilled his team leading 5th homerun of the season over the leftfield wall, pushing the lead out to 7-0.
Rob Whitenack (2-4), back home in New York City started and was dominant for Mahoning Valley. We went 5 shutout innings allowing just 5 hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out 6. Kyle Crockett worked a perfect 6th inning with 1 strike out. Rafeal Homblert finished out the game in the 7th inning. Homblert allowed 3 runs on 2 hits, including a 2 run homerun to Brandon Thomas.
