Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
TROY, NY (July 21, 2013) - Lucky number seven. Such was the case on Saturday night for the Renegades, who battled back from a 5-2 deficit and used a five-run seventh inning to take the first game in Tri-City 7-5. Oddly enough, the ValleyCats put up the same number of runs in the same inning in Sunday's game to tie the series with a convincing 9-3 win. Even a season-high 15 hits for the Renegades could not do the trick, setting the stage for an interesting matchup on Monday night in the finale.
The Renegades took the game's first lead in the top of the second after Darryl George led off with a single against Evan Grills (3-0). The ValleyCats lefthander tried picking off George at first numerous times, before one throw got away to move him to second. After striking out Granden Goetzman and James Harris, Julian Morillo brought in his second run of the season with a single to right as George just slid around the tag at the plate.
In the fourth, Tri-City used the longball against Eli Echarry, who had pitched three scoreless innings with just one hit allowed in his first start of the year. Michael Martinez hit his second home run in as many nights, a solo shot to right center that tied the game at one. Two batters later, Ernesto Genoves sent a deep drive over the wall in left to give the 'Cats a 2-1 lead.
Hudson Valley got even in the fifth after a one out triple by Ariel Soriano. With the infield drawn in, Johnny Field grounded out to short but could not score the run. But Ty Young did with an RBI single to tie things up at two apiece. Tri-City got the lead right back in the bottom of the inning after Jon Kemmer singled and Chan Moon walked to open the frame. Echarry (3-2) sent a pickoff throw wide of first that moved both runners to second and third with nobody out. Tony Kemp then lashed a single down the right field line to score both runs and put the ValleyCats back in front 4-2.
Field began the seventh with a double before coming into score the 'Gades third run on an RBI single from Jonathan Qui̮̱onez. Omar Narvaez then popped out to second and with George batting, Andrew Walter's pitchout caught Qui̮̱onez between the bases and he was tagged for the final out.
Facing Corey Jordan in the home seventh, Kemp led off with a walk. A sacrifice bunt from Ramsay moved him to second, and Conrad Gregor's single put runners at the corners with one out. Martinez was hit on the arm with a 1-2 breaking ball, and the bases were full of 'Cats. Ronnie Mitchell then added his third hit of the ballgame, a bases clearing three-run double to the left field wall that put them ahead 7-3. In total, nine batters came to the plate and two more runs would come into score as Tri-City had all it needed for the win.
NOTES: Qui̮̱onez and George each went 4-for-4 and accounted for eight of the 15 Renegades hits...George came in to pitch for the second time this season in the ninth, and got an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play off the bat of D'Andre Toney...James Harris went 2-for-4 with a double...Narvaez finished 0-for-4, ending his team-leading 10-game hitting streak.
The series concludes Monday night at 7:00 PM in the rubber game of three. Castleton, New York native Jaime Schultz (1-0, 2.30 ERA) will make his second start of the year against the ValleyCats' Tanner Bushue (2-1, 2.03 ERA).
