
Vermont Win Streaks Come To End With 5-3 Loss Sunday

BURLINGTON, VT --- The Vermont Lake Monsters saw their season-high three-game winning streak come to an end on Sunday evening with a 5-3 New York-Penn League loss to the Auburn Doubledays at historic Centennial Field.
Auburn took an early 3-0 lead with with a run in the second inning and two more in the third on RBI singles from Jimmy Yezzo and Wilman Rodriguez. Vermont cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly from B.J. Boyd and a Tyler Marincov RBI groundout.
The Doubledays got the lead back to three in the sixth on RBI singles from Cody Dent and Issac Ballou for a 5-2 advantage. Vermont got a run back in the seventh on a two-out Xaiver Macklin double and Melvin Mercedes RBI single, but reliever L.J. Hollins came on with the bases loaded and struckout Marincov to end the inning.
The Lake Monsters had another scoring opportunity in the eighth as they put the tying runs in scoring position with one out after a pair of walks and a sacrifice bunt, but Hollins struckout Ryan Gorton and Macklin to end the threat. Hollins then tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his third save of the season for Auburn (11-21).
Vermont starter Lou Trivino (0-2) allowed four runs on six hits with three walks and 5 1/3 innings to take the loss. Boog Powell had a pair of singles for the Lake Monsters, who were held to four hits in a nine-inning game for the fifth time this season. Dent, the son of former New York Yankees shortstop Bucky Dent, had two RBI for the Doubledays.
The Lake Monsters will wrap up their six-game homestand on Monday with a 7:05 pm game against Auburn at Centennial Field. It is "Hot Dog Heaven" night at the ballpark with 25-cent hot dogs on sale from throughout the game starting when the gates open at 6:00 pm.
