Scrappers score late, surge to 4-1 win over IronBirds

Aberdeen, MD - The Aberdeen IronBirds held a 1-0 lead heading into the eighth inning, but the Mahoning Valley Scrappers scored four runs to take the win, 4-1.

Jacob Cowan and William Roberts were locked in a pitcher's duel for the first five innings. The Scrappers managed just two hits in the first five innings, while the IronBirds had three of their own.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Glynn Davis hit a single. Austin Knight then struck out, but reached on a passed ball, which allowed Davis to reach second. Mychal Givens then hit an RBI single which scored Davis and Aberdeen held a 1-0 lead after six innings.

Mahoning Valley waited until the eighth inning before doing their damage. They sent ten men to the plate and used six singles along with a Devin Jones throwing error to score four runs and take a 4-1 lead that they would not relinquish.

Drew Rucinski earned the win in relief. He pitched three innings, allowed three hits, one run (unearned), striking out five. Enosil Tejeda picked up his sixth save of the season. The Scrappers' pitching struck out 13 IronBird hitters on the evening.

Cowan pitched six shutout innings. He allowed two hits, two walks, striking out eight. Jones took the loss. He went two thirds of an inning, allowing four hits and four runs (three earned).

Game two of this three game set will take place at 2:35 tomorrow afternoon. Trent Howard (2-1, 2.82) will start for Aberdeen and Mahoning Valley will counter with Danny Jiminez (1-2, 3.31).
