-SPIKES RETURN HOME TO FACE SPINNERS: The State College Spikes begin a three-game series with the Lowell Spinners, affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, tonight at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College is 1-2 against the Stedler Division this year, having just completed a three-game series on the road at Tri-City. The Spinners last visited the Spikes in 2009, and took two of three games. State College is 6-7 against Lowell all-time, and 3-3 at home.
-LAST GAME: Wes Freeman launched his fifth home run of the year for the Spikes, but the Tri-City ValleyCats responded with four home runs of their own to top the Spikes, 8-1, on Friday night at Joseph Bruno Stadium. The ValleyCats' home run total was the most for a Spikes opponent this season. Freeman would get State College on the board, though, leading off the fourth inning by sending a 2-1 pitch from Tri-City reliever Adam Champion to left field for a solo home run. Ryan Hafner took the loss for the Spikes, despite being limited to two innings on the mound because of a 55-minute rain delay in the third inning.
-DODSON GETS START FOR SPIKES: Left-hander Zack Dodson makes his first start for State College after being transferred to the Spikes at the end of his rehab assignment. Dodson has made three starts for State College this season after 15 appearances with the Spikes in 2010. Last time out, the 2009 fourth-round draft pick allowed one run on six hits, a walk and a hit batsman in 4 2/3 innings against Brooklyn, leaving the game one out shy of a win.
-LOWELL SENDS GARCIA TO MOUND: Right-hander Jason Garcia gets the call to start the series opener for the Spinners. Garcia was selected in the 17th round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Red Sox out of Land O' Lakes High School in Florida. The righty has made seven starts this season, and has gone five innings in all but two starts. One of those starts was on Sunday against Auburn, allowing six runs in 1 2/3 innings to take his first loss of the year.
