Fielding Eludes Doubledays in Blowout Loss

July 30, 2011 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Auburn Doubledays News Release

Auburn, NY - Friday night was a night best forgotten for the Auburn Doubledays. Auburn had a season high six errors and season low three hits in a 9-1 loss at home to the Hudson Valley Renegades. The loss dropped the Doubledays to 22-19, a game out of first place in the Pinckney division.

It got ugly early for the Doubledays, who struggled to play catch behind starting pitcher Christian Meza. In his fifth start with the Doubledays, Meza gave up five hits and seven runs in his three and one-third innings of work. However, Meza deserved much better. With him on the mound, the Auburn defense committed five errors leading to two unearned runs in the eight-run loss.

When all was said and done, the Doubledays allowed three unearned runs on six errors, five of which were committed in innings two through four.

The only offense for Auburn came courtesy of a hit-batsman followed by two walks in the eighth inning and a couple wild pitches. Billy Burns scored Auburn's first and only run of the game, scampering home from third. Auburn managed just three hits on the night, singles by Caleb Ramsey and Hendry Jimenez and a double by Connor Rowe. But the three hits for the Doubledays paled in comparison to Hudson Valley's eleven.

The loss ends the Auburn home stand on a bad note, as the Doubledays head to the road tomorrow for three games at Tri-City. Auburn will look to get off their two-game losing streak tomorrow night in a 7pm start against the Valley Cats. Fans are invited to listen to the play-by-play of the game on 89.1 FM in Auburn or on the internet at www.auburndoubledays.com.
