Aberdeen IronBirds Game Notes
July 30, 2011 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Tonight's Match-up
Tonight, the Aberdeen IronBirds return home to open up a three-game series with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Cleveland Indians). The IronBirds are coming off a series at the Jamestown Jammers in which they dropped two of three games. Aberdeen was shutout last night at Jamestown 5-0. Three Jammers pitchers scattered seven hits over nine innings of work. On the other side, Parker Bridwell surrendered four runs (three earned) on seven hits in four innings of work. Tonight, Aberdeen will have the right-hander Jake Cowan on the hill. Cowan is looking for his first win of the season. He'll go up against right-hander Will Roberts, who is coming off an All-American season at the University of Virginia.
Bridwell Tops League Leaders
Despite taking his fourth loss of the season last night, Bridwell struck out four batters in four innings pitched. With the four K's he now leads the New York-Penn League in strikeouts. Bridwell has whiffed 46 batters in 37.2 innings of work.
Berry's Bouncing Back
After one of the worst outings of his career at the Brooklyn Cyclones, pitcher Ryan Berry has surrendered just one run over his last four innings of work. Berry is currently working his way back from a shoulder strain. He's made four appearances for Aberdeen, going 0-1 with a 9.72 ERA.
Velleggia's Streak Ends
The Jammers did something last night few teams have been able to do in the month of July: hold Joe Velleggia hitless. The big power-hitting first baseman had his 10-game hitting streak snapped last night. The streak was the second-longest by an IronBirds hitter this season (Glynn Davis hit safely in 11 straight games).
Winning at Home
Tonight, the IronBirds are looking for a season-high third straight win in-a-row at Ripken Stadium. Aberdeen won its final two games at home against the Batavia Muckdogs before the off-day.
All-American Opponent
Roberts, who is the starting pitcher tonight for the Scrappers, is coming off an All-American season at the University of Virginia. He helped pitch the Cavaliers to the semi-finals of the College World Series where they fell to the eventual champions the University of South Carolina.
