West Virginia Black Bears News Release

Granville, WV - With the series tied, the West Virginia Black Bears were defeated by the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 8-4 at Monongalia County Ballpark.

West Virginia sported alternate jerseys for tonight's contest, which were auctioned off during the game to raise money for the local organization Stepping Stones.

Rocking the fresh uniforms, the Black Bears struck first in the bottom of the second inning. After LF Edison Lantigua reached on an infield single, two wild pitches and a passed ball brought him around to score to give West Virginia an early 1-0 advantage

Mahoning Valley wasted no time in response, coming up with five runs in the top of the third to take the lead.

In the bottom of the same inning, more pitching miscues lead to another Black Bears run. CF Daniel Amaral led things off with a double and a stolen base to put himself in prime scoring position.

Then with RF Brett Kinneman at the plate, another wild pitch helped Amaral come home from third base, cutting the deficit to 5-2.

After another run came across for the Scrappers in the fourth inning, P Nicholas Economos came in for West Virginia to provide solid extended relief. The tall righty gave his team four innings of three-hit baseball, surrendering only one run while striking three batters and giving up a lone walk.

Mahoning Valley snagged another run in the top of the eighth inning, but in the bottom half a wild pitch brought Kinneman around to bring the Black Bears' third run. SS Robbie Glendinning followed up with an RBI single to bring the score to 8-4.

P Juan Henriquez threw a shutout inning with two strikeouts in the top of the ninth, but West Virginia couldn't complete the comeback, as the team's record falls to 6-9 this season.

The Black Bears hit the road for a three-game series with the Batavia Muckdogs that begins tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
