Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, Ct. - For the second time in three nights, the Connecticut Tigers (5-10) walked off the Staten Island Yankees (4-11) as Luke Sherley drew a four-pitch walk with the bases loaded to complete a three-game sweep, 5-4, on Saturday at Dodd Stadium.
Dayton Dugas led off the ninth with a double down the left field line, Ulrich Bojarksi beat out a groundball to third, and a sacrifice bunt attempt by Moises Nunez was bobbled by Staten Island reliever Christian Morris (Loss, 0-1) to load the bases. Sherley, selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 14th round of this year's draft, watched four pitches sail wide of the plate and picked up his first RBI in three games with Connecticut as Dugas walked home from third. Sherley finished with three walks on Saturday.
Connecticut carried a 4-1 lead into the eighth inning. After retiring the first nine batters he faced, 18-year-old Australian Jack O'Loughlin ran into trouble when the Yankees chipped away with a walk, a single, and an RBI groundout by Danienger Perez. Staten Island cut the deficit to 4-3 later in the eighth when O'Loughlin balked to score Jerry Seitz from third.
Tigers reliever Jhonny Mateo (Win, 1-1) failed to complete a four-out save when he relieved O'Loughlin. Staten Island left fielder Canaan Smith doubled with one out in the ninth and pinch runner Ricardo Ferreira quickly advanced to third. He later scored the game-tying run on a passed ball charged to Nunez.
Connecticut erupted for three runs in the sixth inning against Chase Hodson. Teddy Hoffman drove in a pair of runs with a double to left and Jose Quero scored Hoffman on an RBI single. Hoffman led the Tigers on Saturday with two RBI and a run scored.
The Tigers scored an unearned run against Staten Island starter Alex Mauricio, who struck out 10 batters in five innings. With two outs in the second, Nunez scored from second base on a dropped strike three after the catcher, Seitz, tried to throw out Nunez at third and Wagaman committed a fielding error at first base.
Connecticut starter Carlos Guzman set new career highs with eight strikeouts in four innings of work. He allowed just two hits including a solo home run to Wagaman in the fourth to tie the game, 1-1.
Following a ten-game losing streak, the Tigers have won three games in a row for their longest unbeaten stretch in 2018. Connecticut also walked off Staten Island on Thursday thanks to two errors by Perez at third base that allowed two Australians, Cam Warner and Bojarski, to score the decisive runs in a 4-3 victory.
On Sunday, Connecticut opens a three-game road series against the Stedler Division-rival Lowell Spinners at 5:35 p.m. The Tigers return home to Dodd Stadium on July 4 at 7:05 p.m. against the Spinners with an Independence Day fireworks spectacular following the game.
