Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
TROY, NY- The Tri-City ValleyCats pounded out 14 hits Saturday night to defeat the Hudson Valley Renegades 9-2 at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium as the Renegades saw their nine-game wining streak come to a close. The loss also prevented a three-game sweep for the Renegades who finish the month of June at 11-4.
The ValleyCats started the scoring in the fourth inning. Rightfielder Gilbert Celestino led off the inning with a groundball single to center. He promptly stole second base and went to third as catcher Erik Ostberg's throw went into centerfield. Two batters later, third baseman Michael Wielansky grounded a single to left to put Tri-City on the board.
However, it was the fifth inning where Tri-City would bust things open. Shortstop Trey Dawson started the frame by lining a single to center. After reaching, Dawson stole second then scored on a groundball single to left from catcher Alex Holderbach. Hudson Valley starting pitcher Nick Padilla was lifted for reliever Alan Strong, however things did not improve. The righty allowed a single to centerfielder Alex McKenna before a double steal from Holderbach and McKenna put runners at second and third with two away. Celestino came up next and smoke a double to center to score both runners. Juan Pineda followed with a grounder into rightfield to bring in Celestino and give Tri-City a 5-0 lead.
The Renegades tried to get back into the game in the sixth as an RBI double to right by Erik Ostberg scored Jacson McGowan to put Hudson Valley on the board. Later in the inning the Renegades loaded the bases with no one out, however Tri-City's bullpen got a popup, shallow fly out, and groundout to short to limit the damage.
The home team got the run back in the bottom-half on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by McKenna to make it 6-1. The Renegades, again, loaded the bases with no one out in the seventh, but could only manage one run on a bases-loaded walk to rightfielder Marvin Malone. A foul pop to first, a strikeout, and a fly out to right ended the inning with Hudson Valley trailing 6-2.
The ValleyCats put the game away with three more runs in the seventh. A two-out, two-run double to center by Dawson preceded an RBI single to center from designated hitter Jose Carrillo to put Tri-City ahead 9-2.
Getting the win for Tri-City was starting pitcher Felipe Tejada (2-1) who tossed five scoreless innings and struck out four while allowing three hits. Padilla (1-2) took the loss for Hudson Valley. The right-hander gave up three runs, two earned, on seven hits in 4.1 innings. He also struck out three.
Dawson finished the game 4-4 for Tri-City with two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored. Celestino finished 3-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Wielansky chipped in with a couple of singles, an RBI, and a run for the ValleyCats. Designated hitter Tanner Dodson and shortstop Ford Proctor had two hits apiece for the Renegades with Proctor registering a double and a run scored.
The Renegades now head to Aberdeen for the first of a three-game series against the Ironbirds beginning tomorrow. First-pitch slated for 4:05. Southpaw Blake Pflughaupt (1-0, 0.82 ERA) will toe the rubber for Hudson Valley against fellow lefty Willie Rios (0-0, 2.25 ERA) of the Ironbirds.
Hudson Valley returns home on July 5th when they open a brief two-game series and homestand against the Staten Island Yankees. Both games start at 7:05 and will include a postgame fireworks show. Tickets can be purchased online at hvrenegades.com or by calling the ticket office at 845-838-0094.
