August 7, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[RIO RANCHO, N.M.]- The New Mexico Scorpions, proud member of the Central Hockey League (CHL), have learned their return to the ice will be made official on Saturday, October 21 in Amarillo as the team returns to play following a one-year hiatus that saw the construction of the team's new home, the Santa Ana Star Center. The date was made official, as well as the team's full slate of games, as the CHL released the official 2006-07 schedule this morning. The home schedule features 13 Friday night games and eight Saturday night games.
Following the venture to Texas, the Scorpions will officially open the state-of-the-art Santa Ana Star Center on Friday, October 27 versus their new Southwest Division rival, the Arizona Sundogs, with the face-off time set for 7:05 p.m.
Opening night against the Amarillo Gorillas comes with a fun twist as Scorpions' Head Coach Ray Edwards will not be the only bench boss to make his debut for a new team. Across the way, Amarillo will have a yet-to-be-named new coach, following the departure of Joe Ferris who went to the American Hockey League. Ferris had been Amarillo's head coach for the past five seasons.
"I am excited to have the schedule done; it means we are close to dropping the puck on the new season," said Edwards. "It will be nice for me personally to rekindle old rivalries I have had with Amarillo, Lubbock and Odessa when I coached in San Angelo."
Following their home opener, the Scorps' will get on the bus for a Saturday, October 28 affair in Colorado to face the Eagles in what will be the first of four trips to the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, CO for the Scorpions.
Upon their return from Colorado, New Mexico begins a three game home stand at the Santa Ana Star Center which will feature the first ever visit from the Youngstown SteelHounds on Wednesday, November 1 and Friday, November 3. Both games begin at 7:05 p.m.
This season's schedule features 35 games against Southwest Division opponents. The Scorpions will face the expansion Sundogs 14 times, while facing their old rivals from Amarillo just seven times. Five of the games against the Gorillas will be hosted by New Mexico. Match-ups against the two other division foes, Odessa and Lubbock will count for 14 games in total.
"It looks like we may quickly develop a great rivalry with the Arizona Sundogs," said Edwards. "It will be great to have a new team to add to the existing Scorpions' rivals. I am also going to enjoy playing new teams like Rocky Mountain and having Youngstown make their first visit to New Mexico."
Fans will get to see the defending Ray Miron Cup winner's from Laredo on Wednesday, January 31. It will be the lone visit the Bucks makes to the Santa Ana Star Center.
The CHL's other new entry, the Rocky Mountain Rage, will quickly become a new rival for the Scorpions. The Rage will visit the Scorpions four times this upcoming season, with their first visit on Saturday, December 9 at 7:05 p.m.
Fans staying in New Mexico for Thanksgiving will have a chance to eat turkey and see plenty of hockey. The Scorpions play on Thanksgiving Eve, Wednesday November 22 against the Odessa Jackalopes. New Mexico will also host the Austin Ice Bats following Thanksgiving on Friday, November 24 and Saturday 25.
Young fans will have their special day at the Scorpions game on Wednesday, February 28. The annual "Kids Day Out" game will pit the Scorpions against Arizona at 10:00 a.m. All local school's will be encouraged to take a field trip as the Scorpions have special ticket discounts and activities planned around the hockey game.
