Scorching Loons Stay Hot
August 8, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - Thanks to Luke Heyer, the Great Lakes Loons can still claim they're the best team in the Midwest League after Thursday night. It was fitting that Heyer, who drove in four of the five Loons runs, was the one to send everyone home happy.
After clobbering his 14th home run of the season earlier in the game, the eighth round pick stepped to the plate with one out and smoked a double to the wall in right field to give the Loons the 5-4 walk-off win over the Lake County Captains. It was the fourth walk-off win of the season for the Loons at Dow Diamond.
The winning streak is now at a modest four games, but more importantly the Loons now sit at 71-42 (.629) which remains the best record through 113 games in the league. It also keeps the Loons near the top five teams in all of Minor League Baseball in 2019. Already with a playoff spot clinched, Great Lakes is trending towards also being one of those much-desired "hot" teams entering the postseason in just 27 days.
For a good portion of the night, it didn't look like it was going to be in the cards for the Loons trailing 4-1 and then 4-3 heading into the latter stages of the game. With Heyer's 2-for-4 performance, the team managed just three other hits, all singles by the combination of James Outman, Leonel Valera and Dan Robinson.
Robinson Ortiz started on the mound for the Loons and went five innings allowing four runs on five hits. Jasiel Alvino and Mark Washington (W, 3-1) were responsible for putting up four straight innings of zeros on the scoreboard allowing just two hits in the process.
