Arkansas Travelers News Release

Springfield, Missouri - One night after suffering their worst loss of the year the Arkansas Travelers bounced back for a 5-3 victory over the Springfield Cardinals at Hammons Field to snap a five-game losing streak. A.J. Schugel (3-5) starred throwing seven outstanding innings limiting the Cards to three base hits and one walk while allowing just one run and striking out four. He set down 12 of the first 13 batters while the Travs jumped on Springfield's Scott Gorgen (2-5) for three runs in the second inning. Jean Segura doubled, singled and drove in two runs while stealing his 23rd base. Casey Haerther doubled and homered (5) as well.

The Travs knocked Springfield back in the TL North standings by two games with the win, but at 24-38 they remain in last place. The Cards lost for just the second time in eight games to fall to 32-30 for the year.

The Travs rallied in the second inning against Gorgen with the first six batters reaching base. Roberto Lopez was caught stealing after hitting a leadoff single, but Gorgen walked Darwin Perez and Angel Castillo. Jimmy Swift put the Travs up with an RBI single to left field. After Jose Jimenez singled to load the bases, Segura knocked a double to the left field corner bringing in two runs for a 3-0 lead.

Schugel was dominant over the first four innings needing just 48 pitches to record 12 outs.

Ryan Mount drew a walk in the fifth inning and attempted to score on a double by Haerther, but Adam Melker played the carom off the centerfield fence barehanded and fired to Kolten Wong who threw out Mount at the plate. Gorgen was pulled after the base hit and was charged with his fourth run when reliever Jesse Simpson allowed Lopez's RBI double for a 4-0 Travs lead.

Schugel allowed his first runner to second base when Wong reached on a fielding error by Segura and moved up when Jermaine Curtis grounded out. Oscar Taveras followed with a hard drive to center that was caught at the fence on an over-the-shoulder grab by Angel Castillo for the third out.

The Cards broke through in the seventh inning loading the bases with a Jake Shaffer single and two walks by Schugel. Only one run scored when Audry Perez grounded into a fielder's choice. Schugel struck out pinch hitter Kyle Conley to end the frame.

Haerther got that run back for the Travs when he homered to right field off Justin Wright leading off the eighth inning.

Andrew Taylor worked the bottom of the eighth for the Travs allowing RBI doubles by Taveras and Shaffer, but kept a 5-3 lead into the ninth.

Kevin Johnson, who rejoined the Travs from Salt Lake during Monday's game, retired the Cards in order for the save in the ninth inning.

Time of game was 2:44 and the paid attendance was 3,001.

The third game of the set is Tuesday night at Hammons Field with Johnny Hellweg (2-4, 4.11) on the mound against Cards righty Seth Maness (2-0, 1.75). First pitch is set for 7:08 p.m.
