Springfield Cardinals News Release

Springfield, MO - A night after Springfield achieved franchise records; the offense could only conjure three runs against the Arkansas Travelers, losing 5-3.

Jake Shaffer led Springfield's offense in a losing cause going three for four with a double and an RBI. The Travelers' Casey Haerther hit a home run in the eighth inning, which proved important as the game became close near the final innings.

Arkansas scored first the ballgame during the second inning. Jimmy Swift hit an RBI single and Jean Segura drove in two runs on a double to center field.

Springfield starter Scott Gorgen pitched into trouble in the fifth inning. He allowed a walk and a double to Haerther before he departed the game for Jesse Simpson. Roberto Lopez subsequently doubled in Haerther giving the Travelers a 4-0 lead. The one bright spot of the inning occurred when Springfield threw Ryan Mount out at home. When Haerther doubled, Adam Melker and Kolten Wong collectively threw Mount out at home with Audry Perez applying the tag.

Gorgen (2-5) left the ballgame after four and two-thirds innings. He allowed four runs on six hits. Walks hurt Gorgen as he gave up four, with two scoring.

The Cardinals could only muster one run after they loaded the bases in the bottom of seventh inning. A fielder's choice off the bat of Perez scored Shaffer.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Arkansas answered with a leadoff home run in the top of the eighth inning off the bat of Haerther, providing Arkansas a 5-1 lead. This home run came off lefty reliever Justin Wright.

Travelers' starter AJ Schugel (3-5) pitched six scoreless innings, and ended with seven innings giving up one run on just three hits. He retired seven Cardinals to begin the game until Perez recorded a single.

Springfield added two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Oscar Taveras drove in Breyvic Valera from first base with a double to center field. Shaffer then hit a double to right field scoring Taveras. These two runs were the last for Springfield as Arkansas closed down the Cardinals in the ninth for the victory, 5-3.

Springfield continues their four-game series with the Arkansas Travelers tomorrow night at 7:08pm. The Cardinals will send Seth Maness to the mound against righty Johnny Hellweg of the Travs.
