Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

San Antonio (24-37) @ Corpus Christi (31-30)

The Hooks jumped on starter Josh Geer for 10 runs in the first three innings and coasted, sort of, to an 11-6 win over the Missions in last night's series opener. Jonathan Villar homered to open the home first and Drew Locke provided a two-run double in Corpus Christi's six-run bottom of the second. Tacking on single runs in the third and fourth, the Hooks carried an 11-0 bulge into the fifth, when the visitors erupted for five runs on five hits.

Corpus Christi's bullpen helped to settle the issue once again. Alex Sogard tossed two innings of shutout relief while Henry Villar allowed just one run over the final two frames. The duo preserved the win for starter Ross Seaton (5-3).

With four wins in a row the Hooks remain mathematically in contention in the TL South first-half race. The Hooks enter play tonight five games behind first-place Frisco with nine left to play in the half.

Tonight's Matchup:

LHP Tom Layne (0-1, 6.00) vs. RHP Jose Cisnero (2-6, 4.58)

Layne, obtained by the Padres in a trade with the Diamondbacks on May 1 for future considerations, makes his third appearance and second start for the Missions. Last Wednesday at Wolff Municipal Stadium, Layne allowed seven runs, six earned, on nine hits and two walks over 4.0 innings in an 11-10 loss to the RoughRiders. That effort was in stark contrast to his San Antonio debut June 1 at Springfield, when he tossed five innings of shutout relief against the Cardinals. Originally a 26th-round selection of the Diamondbacks out of Mount Olive College (NC), Layne began the season with AAA Reno, where he was 0-2 with a 10.35 ERA in five appearances (4 starts) for the Aces. After the trade, Layne reported to Tucson, where he went 0-3 with a 7.77 ERA in five starts for San Diego's AAA club. Overall at the plate this season Layne is 4-for-10 with 1 double and 1 run.

- Has a 6.00 GO/AO ratio in his 2 outings with the Missions (2.21 w/Tucson; 1.50 w/Reno)

- Overall this season is 0-6 with an 8.47 ERA, with 28 walks and 37 strikeouts in 51.0 IP

- With AA Mobile in 2010 (12-7, 3.74 ERA, 26 GS) ranked 2nd in the Southern League in complete games (3) and third in both wins and innings pitched (149.1)

Cisnero, signed by the Astros as a non-drafted free agent in December of 2007, makes his 13th start this season and his second against the Missions. Last Wednesday to open this home stand against Midland, Cisnero carried a two-hit shutout into the seventh inning. Three singles to start the seventh brought about an end to his evening - and all three of those runners eventually scored against the bullpen as Cisnero and the Hooks suffered a 6-3 loss. Cisnero struck out 10 on the evening, his second-highest strikeout total of the year. Though he is 0-1 over his last three starts, Cisnero's ERA in that span is 2.50. Last year, as a stalwart in Lancaster's rotation, Cisnero led all Houston farmhands and ranked sixth in the California League with 152 strikeouts. Selected Lancaster's pitcher of the month twice last season (May and July), Cisnero led the JetHawks in starts (27) and tied for the team lead in wins (8).

- Selected as the Texas League's Pitcher of the Week May 28-June 3 (7.0-5-1-0-1-7, ND at Ark May 31)

- Has held opponents to four runs or less in 11 of his 12 starts

- Lost at San Antonio May 15 (2.1-2-2-2-3-4)

Streaking

Corpus Christi's current four-game winning streak marks the fourth time this season the Hooks have won at least four in a row. The Hooks have, on two occasions, won as many as five straight this season (April 20-24 and May 21-26), but have yet to string together six consecutive victories.

For the greater good

The Hooks have significantly increased their sacrifice numbers since mid May. In the club's first 36 games, the Hooks had 11 sacrifice bunts and 7 sacrifice flies. In the last 25 games (since May 14), the Hooks have produced 15 sacrifice bunts and 11 sacrifice flies.

Martinez keeps it up

Second baseman Jose Martinez went 3-for-5 last night with 2 runs and 1 RBI to extend his current hitting streak to nine games. Martinez is batting .350 (14x40) during the streak with 2 doubles and 8 RBIs. He stands third in the league in hitting (.318) and is doing even better with runners in scoring position (.338).

With his recent surge in RBIs (15 RBIs in his last 17 games), Martinez is now fifth in the loop with 38 RBIs. He's also moved to fourth in the league in hits (69).

His current streak is his second-longest of the year. Martinez hit safely in 12 straight May 15-28.
