Asheville Tourists News Release

CHARLESTON, SC- The Asheville Tourists dropped a heart-breaker on Thursday night, 3-2, to the Charleston RiverDogs in ten innings. Asheville went the entire game without trailing, until Chris Hess hit a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the tenth.

Garrett Schilling was the star of the evening. Asheville's starting pitcher went longer into a ballgame than any Tourists pitcher this year. Schilling dominated the RiverDogs through seven innings and his only blemish was a fourth inning run. Schilling allowed only three hits and struck out a season-high nine batters.

The Tourists took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Matt McLaughlin hit a two-out RBI single to score Shael Mendoza. After Charleston tied the score in the fourth, Schilling still had an opportunity for the win. Asheville benefitted from two Charleston errors in the top of the eighth and took a 2-1 lead.

Steven Sensley tied the game 2-2 with a solo Home Run in the eighth but Asheville had a chance in the ninth. The Tourists put runners at first and third with two outs. With the opportunity to just back in front, Ryan Vilade was controversially picked off first base. The call left the Tourists and manager Robinson Cancel stunned.

In the top of the tenth, Asheville failed to put down a sacrifice bunt and attempted a double steal. Again, it appeared as if the Tourists executed it to perfection but another out call was made on the bases. The Tourists ran into a total of four outs on the base paths in the game.

Once the Tourists were held without a run in the tenth, it was Charleston's game to win. Asheville issued two intentional walks to load the bases and Chris Hess hit the game-winning single back up the middle.

The Tourists are now 1-3 in extra inning games this year but hope to bounce back quickly with a 7:00pm first pitch in Rome, Georgia on Friday night.
