Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

SALISBURY, MD - Mason McCoy shot a liner past first with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th, lifting the Delmarva Shorebirds to a 9-8 win and sweep over the Greenville Drive on Thursday afternoon at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

With the Shorebirds (19-8) down 8-7, Ryan Ripken started the inning at second base, and Ben Breazeale got hit by a pitch to put two men on with nobody out. Seamus Curran then stepped up to pinch hit and drew a walk to load the bases. Frank Crinella hit into a force at the plate, but Kirvin Moesquit took a fastball between the shoulderblades, forcing in Breazeale to tie the game. McCoy then laced a 1-2 pitch under the glove of Victor Acosta at first and into right, bringing home Curran and setting off a celebration in the sun, three hours and 39 minutes in the making.

Alex Katz (3-1) picked up the win in relief despite giving up three unearned runs in three innings. He gave up three hits and struck out three. Devon Fisher (0-2) took the heavy workload and loss for the Drive (5-22), giving up three runs (two earned) in 2.1 innings and 51 pitches out of the bullpen.

Greenville jumped in front with the first five runs of the game. With Lorenzo Cedrola on second and two out in the top of the third, Victor Acosta lined an RBI single up the middle to make it 1-0 Drive. In the exact same situation in the fifth, Acosta came through with a broken bat liner to center to bring Cedrola around again.

In the sixth, Jagger Rusconi doubled to lead off and got to third on a Frankie Rios single. Kervin Suarez hit into a fielder's choice to chase home Rusconi, then Ricardo Cubillan doubled home another and Cedrola singled home Cubillan two batters later, putting Greenville up 5-0.

Delmarva began its comeback in the home half of the sixth. McCoy brought home one on an RBI groundout, then with two out and a man on third, T.J. Nichting laid down a squeeze bunt to make it 5-2.

Moesquit, McCoy, and Jarrett produced three straight one-out singles in the eighth to chase home another. After a strikeout, Trevor Craport roped one down the left field line and all the way into the corner, scoring McCoy and Jarrett to tie the game at 5-5. Ripken came up next and hit a liner to short, but Cubillan dropped the ball, allowing Nichting to score and put the Shorebirds up 6-5.

The Drive wouldn't go away quietly in the ninth, though. Cole Brannen doubled to lead off then scored on a sac bunt and error at short, sending it to extras at 6-6. It was just the second extra-inning game of the year for the Shorebirds.

Greenville scored its run from second in the top of the 10th on a sac bunt and Suarez single. In the bottom of the 10th, McCoy walked to put two on and nobody out. Jarrett then hit a sharp grounder to third that turned into a double play, but Jarrett legged it out to avoid the game-ending triple play. Nichting followed with a sharp single to center, and Brannen mishandled the ball, letting it get behind him. Jarrett came around to score all the way from first, and the game soldiered onto the 11th at 7-7.

Cedrola lined an RBI single into left to score Cubillan in the top of the 11th, putting the Drive up 8-7 and setting up the Shorebirds' heroics in the bottom of the 11th.

McCoy finished the day 2-for-5 with a run and two RBIs, including the third walkoff hit of the season for Delmarva. Nicting went 3-for-5 with a run and the squeeze RBI. Moesquit had a single, double, two runs, and an RBI.

Cedrola finished 3-for-5 with a double, two runs, and two RBIs to lead the Drive. Acosta had a pair of RBI singles, while Suarez drove in two and scored once.

Matthias Dietz started for the Shorebirds, allowing two runs on five hits in five innings while walking two and striking out seven. The Drive's Alex Scherff tossed five scoreless two-hit innings in the no-decision.

The win gives Delmarva its fourth sweep of the season and seventh win in their last eight games. The Shorebirds are now 7-0 against Southern Division competition this season after opening with a four-game sweep of Asheville.

The Shorebirds open the back leg of their seven-game homestand on Friday night with the first of four against the South-leading Augusta GreenJackets.
