Lexington Legends News Release
SPIRIT COMMUNICATIONS PARK (Columbia, SC) - Despite Lexington Legends starting pitcher Daniel Tillo striking out the first nine batters he faced, the Legends fell 4-3 in their first taste of extra innings in 2018. The Legends now drop to 13-12 and the Fireflies improve to 14-13.
Tillo retired the first 11 batters that he faced, striking out the first nine Fireflies that stepped to the plate. Tillo tossed 6.1 innings allowing three runs on one hit while striking out 10 and walking one. Josh Mitchell pitched in relief for the Legends, throwing 1.2 innings, not allowing a run while walking one and striking out three. Tyler Zuber was given the loss for Lexington, tossing 1.1 innings, allowing one run (unearned) on one hit while walking one and striking out two.
The Legends and the Fireflies both had a no-hitter until the top of the sixth inning. Lexington's Oliver Nunez reached on a walk then advanced to third base on a throwing error by Columbia's pitcher, Tony Dibrell, who was trying to pickoff Nunez at first base. Travis Jones singled Nunez home and the Legends led, 1-0.
In the top of the seventh inning, Seuly Matias hit a leadoff home run, his eighth of the season, to left centerfield to extend Lexington's lead to 2-0. Columbia answered in the bottom of the inning after Matt Winaker and Jeremy Vasquez reached on back-to-back walks. Quinn Brodey blasted a three-run home run to put the Fireflies ahead, 3-2.
The Legends tied the ballgame up in the top of the ninth. Nick Pratto tattooed his third home run of the season, tying the game at three runs and sending the game into extra innings.
This was the first time that the Legends experienced Minor League Baseball's new extra inning rule with Jeison Guzman beginning at second base at the start of the 10th inning. The Legends were unable to plate any runs in the top of the 10th. In the bottom of the inning, Ali Sanchez started at second base and was able to score the winning run on an RBI double to right field by Raphael Gladu.
The Legends now travel to Charleston, South Carolina to face the RiverDogs in the first of a four game series, beginning May 4 at 7:05 p.m. The RiverDogs will send RHP Daniel Ramos (2-1, 4.66 ERA) to the mound and the Legends are TBA.
The Legends, a Class A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals and member of the South Atlantic League, play all home games at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in Lexington, Kentucky. For ticket information, call (859) 422-7867 or visit www.lexingtonlegends.com.
