Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa - Veteran forward Garrett Schifsky has been selected as the Waterloo Black Hawks' captain, the team announced on Friday.
The 2022/23 season is Schifsky's second full year in Waterloo, and it has been another strong campaign for the Andover, Minnesota, native. No player has recorded more goals (19) or points (37) for this year's Hawks. The Michigan recruit is also the team's plus/minus leader (+26), which ties for him for sixth overall in the United States Hockey League. Schifsky has been a "plus" or "even" skater during every game since the beginning of January and cumulatively +20 in that time.
"More important than any statistics, Garrett is a player who wants to get better, he wants to make his teammates better, and he wants to win," said Waterloo Head Coach Matt Smaby. "His teammates and our fans see that each day. This is recognition which is well-deserved for someone who is always giving 100 percent to this team."
Schifsky had previously served as an assistant captain.
In addition to his performance for Waterloo in 2022/23, he also helped the U.S. Junior Select Team to a gold medal in December during the 2022 World Junior A Challenge. Over six games during that competition, Schifsky had five goals and an assist. He was also selected to appear in January's BioSteel All-American Game in Plymouth, Michigan.
Last season, Schifsky paced the Black Hawks with 28 goals and 46 points. He added another three goals and one assist during six Clark Cup Playoff appearances. Schifsky's next score will make him just the 19th junior-era Black Hawk with 50 career regular season goals and the first since Nick Swaney, who reached the mark during the 2016/17 season. Consistently reliable as a penalty-killer, Schifsky scored three shorthanded goals last season, and has continued to make contributions this year when Waterloo is down a skater.
The Hawks are on the road this weekend to meet the Lincoln Stars Saturday and the Sioux City Musketeers Sunday. The captain's "C" will be on Schifsky's home jersey for the first time when Waterloo hosts the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on March 11th.
