Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA - Dubuque Fighting Saints Forward Cole Helm has announced his decision to continue his hockey and educational career at Arizona State University.
This season, Helm has appeared in 24 games for the Fighting Saints and has already tied a career-high in goals with two, and set new career benchmarks in assists, with four, and points, with six. Along with the uptick in offense, Helm has continued to be one of the tougher and most physical players in the USHL. He leads the Fighting Saints with 102 penalty minutes which also ranks top five in the USHL.
"It all happened really fast. I talked to them after Tuesday's game against Chicago and their coaches really appreciate my game," said Helm following his commitment to the Sun Devils. "I have that hard hitting, physical role and that's what they want me to come in to do. It's nice to know that my game will be appreciated there. It's the closest I can get to home too and I'm just super excited to go to college.
Helm joined the Fighting Saints mid-way through the 2021-22 season through a trade with his NAHL team, the Corpus Chrisi IceRays. He played in 24 games for Dubuque last season scoring twice and adding 65 penalty minutes. Prior to the trade, he played in 36 games for Corpus Christi registering 11 points.
"Cole Helm has been a big part of the team since the day he arrived," said Fighting Saints President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kalle Larsson. "The way he plays the game is often underrated, but the way he impacts the game with his work and physicality is undeniable. He is one of the hardest workers every day and a very appreciated teammate. We couldn't be more excited to congratulate Cole and his family on his commitment to Arizona State."
Helm played youth hockey for the Dallas Stars AAA program before joining Corpus Christi. He heads to Arizona State who is led by eighth year head coach Greg Powers. The Sun Devils are currently one of six independent schools playing NCAA Division I hockey.
