Savannah Sweeps Legends 5-0, 3-1

(SAVANNAH, Ga.) John Gant pitched a one-hit shutout to lead Savannah to a 5-0 win over Lexington in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday in Savannah. The Sand Gnats completed the sweep with a 3-1 victory in the second game. Doubleheader games in the South Atlantic League are seven innings in length.

Gant struck out eight batters and walked one. The only Lexington hit came in the top of the sixth inning when Carlos Garcia grounded a clean single into right field.

Yeixon Ruiz' two-run homer gave the Sand Gnats the lead in the bottom of the third inning. They added another run in the third after Ruiz' homer on an RBI double by Nelfi Zapata.

Dominic Smith's two -run single in the bottom of the fifth closed out the scoring in the opening game.

Gant improved his record to 10-5. The shutout was his second of the season.

Legends starter Luis Rico (3-7) was the losing pitcher.

In the second game, the Sand Gnats scored a run in the first inning when Patrick Biondi singled, moved to second on an infield out and came home on a single by Matt Oberste.

Victor Cruzado's sacrifice fly in the fourth inning gave Savannah a 2-0 lead, but the Legends got that run back when Fred Ford led off the fifth with his eighth home run of the year.

The Sand Gnats got their final run in the bottom of the fifth when Smith's single scored Champ Stuart, who had walked and moved to second on an errant pickoff throw by Legends reliever Jose Rodriguez.

Alex Panteliodis (3-2) picked up the win. Akeel Morris earned his ninth save after a scoreless seventh inning. Matt Alvarez (4-4) was the starting and losing pitcher for the Legends.

The Sand Gnats have taken the first three games of the series, which concludes Monday. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
