FLORENCE, KY - Everett Saul didn't quite follow up Preston Vancil's no-hitter with one of his own, but he did pick up his league leading ninth victory as the Florence Freedom downed the Traverse City Beach Bums 7-4 Monday night at Champion Window Field.
Saul (9-3) allowed only two earned runs, three total as he set a personal season best by striking out nine Beach Bums. He tied Lake Erie's Paul Fagan for the Frontier League lead in wins.
Florence's offense supported Saul with a couple of home runs and three run innings. Trailing 1-0, Billy Mottram stroked a two out double to right-center to score Matt Stiffler. Erold Andrus followed with his fourth home run of the season to make it 3-1.
Traverse City chipped away and tied the game at three with a run in each of the second and third innings. Mottram's error in the third was Saul's unearned run for the game.
But the Freedom came right back in their half of the third inning when Mottram redeemed himself with a two out RBI triple to make it 4-3 Florence.
Justin Pickett went 2-4 including his fifteenth home run of the season in the sixth. His three run blast capped the Freedom's scoring and sent Traverse City starter David Nathanson (3-8) packing with the loss.
The Beach Bums pushed across a run in the ninth against Jimmy Stanley on a wild pitch to end the rookie's scoreless streak at 10 1/3 innings to begin his pro career.
