River City Rascals News Release
O'FALLON, MO - The Rascals offense reached double digits for the second straight game, pounding the RiverHawks 13-2 Monday night at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. River City tallied 13 runs on 14 hits to take the first two games against Rockford.
River City (34-24) got on the board with three first inning runs and never trailed in the contest. Jay Monti (5-6) struck out the first two but allowed three consecutive singles to start the scoring. Chris Colton, who singled in Scott Robinson, scored on a throwing error by Ben Blumenthal after Ryan Wehrle crossed home plate on a Doug Sanders fielding error.
Josh Lowey (5-1) got all the support he needed, going seven scoreless innings for his fifth win. Lowey surrendered seven hits and struck out five as the RiverHawks stranded eight runners on base against Lowey.
The Rascals blew the game open with a six run eighth inning against Cody Sharp. Andy Reilly, who replaced Robinson in the eighth, doubled down the right field line to give the Rascals a 9-2 advantage. Ryan Groth singled home two more and Danny Sawyer connected on his fourth home run for the 13-2 final.
Rockford (29-29) plated two in the top of the eighth against Tony Marsala. Brandon Cohen doubled off the wall to plate Ross McCoy. Sanders followed with a groundout to score the final RiverHawk run of the night.
River City scored a pair of runs in the third and fifth innings for the 7-0 lead. Groth doubled home a run in the third and Sawyer another with a groundout. Sawyer and Batten drove in runs in the fifth to back Lowey.
All ten Rascals with an at-bat had at least one hit while Robinson, Groth, Batten and Wehrle all had two hits. Sawyer finished with a game high four runs batted in and Groth knocked in three more.
The Rascals go for the sweep tomorrow over the RiverHawks. Jake Laber (7-3) will go up against John Muller (2-3), who is making his first start of the season. First pitch at T.R. Hughes Ballpark is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
