Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE, NC-- On Saturday, July 23, the Asheville Tourists play host to the Greenville Drive. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a one of a kind McCormick Field Speedway replica presented by Coca-Cola. The first pitch is at 6:05pm and the gates will open at 5:00pm.

This unique giveaway will connect current Tourists fans with a memorable era in McCormick Field's rich traditional history. The stadium was built in 1924 and has played as the host facility to Asheville's professional baseball franchise in a number of different leagues. Throughout its many years baseball legends have taken the field but from 1955-58, McCormick Field hosted legends in another sport; stock car racing.

The grounds at McCormick Field were transformed to a racetrack and hosted former NASCAR greats Lee Petty, Fireball Roberts, Ralph Earnhardt, Ned Jarrett, and local legend Banjo Matthews. Even today, remains from the racetrack can be found behind the outfield wall and third base stands.

In addition to the premium giveaway item, the Tourists will be wearing special pink jerseys for the annual "Pink in the Park" promotion presented by Asheville Radiology. To bid on one of these pink jerseys and help the fight against breast cancer visit TouristsAuctions.com.

Asheville is in the middle of a seven-game homestand with game three scheduled for 7:05pm tonight against the Augusta GreenJackets. Tickets are available at the ServPro Box Office or by calling the front office at (828)258-0428.

Please direct any questions or interview requests to Doug Maurer at (828) 258-0428 ext. 203 or dmaurer@theashevilletourists.com.
