RiverDogs Fall Flat, Drop Series Finale to West Virginia, 4-2

CHARLESTON, WV - The Charleston RiverDogs' offense found some life in the third inning to rally back from a two run deficit but were held in check otherwise as the RiverDogs fell, 4-2, to the West Virginia to drop the three game series at Appalachian Power Park on Friday night. Charleston was held to just four hits by West Virginia starter Logan Sendelbach who looked untouchable after the RiverDogs tagged him for a pair of runs in the third.
Trailing 2-0, Kane Sweeney got the RiverDogs offense going with a leadoff double ripped into the left-center gap. Second baseman Chris Godinez followed with an infield single to put runners at the corners before a sacrifice bunt by Cesar Diaz moved the runners over. Ricardo Ferreira followed with a sac fly to right to put Charleston on the board. On the next play, Gosuke Katoh cranked a triple to the right field corner to score Godinez and tie the ballgame at 2-2.
In the fifth, West Virginia took command once again. Power catcher Christian Kelley sparked the outburst with an infield single with one out before scoring on an Alfredo Reyes double to left that gave West Virginia a 3-2 advantage.
In the sixth, Logan Hill smashed a leadoff triple off of RiverDogs starter Luis Cedeno (5-5). First baseman Carlos Munoz brought the runner home on a sacrifice fly to center and made it a 4-2 advantage.
Cedeno went 5.2 innings for Charleston, allowing four earned runs on eight hits with no walks and eight strikeouts to take the loss. Eddie Rivera was electric out of the bullpen in his RiverDogs debut. The Dominican righty punched out six batters and did not allow a hit in 2.1 innings to keep Charleston within striking distance.
West Virginia took the early lead off Cedeno in the bottom of the first. Casey Hughston singled to lead off the frame before a sac bunt by Logan Ratledge moved him over and a triple by Logan Hill brought him home to score. The Power made it 2-0 when designated hitter Daniel Arribas pounded a double to left.

The RiverDogs start a four-game series with the Hagerstown Suns, the Class A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, at Municipal Stadium. The RiverDogs will send RHP Anyelo Gomez (2-1, 2.83) in game one with the Suns starter to be announced. Charleston returns to The Joe for a four-game homestand from July 28-31against Lexington.
